Krieg777, the photos may unfortunately be deceiving at that point... The camp has suffered a lot throughout the years, although it is undoubtedly better preserved than other camps. The Soviet army, as well as the NVA and the Volkspolizei of the DDR had been using the camp well into 1990, which lead to the demolition of several buildings, including the "Station Z", the prisoners' barracks, the execution trench etc, to fulfill practical needs. The local population had also taken material from the camp for building works and heating.

After 1961, just a small part (about 5% of the camp) was open to the public as a memorial and it had also undergone radical changes from its original form. In 1992 barracks No38 fell victim of a neo-nazi attack and were destroyed, before they were rebuilt back in 1998. The few remaining original buildings and the reconstructions are being preserved and restored by the Brandenburg Memorials Foundation since 1993.

I have tried taking my photos in a way that they would show as much as possible of the original elements, also hiding as much as possible of the post war alterations.

Visiting Sachsenhausen is a really interesting and unforgettable experience, from every historical aspect, even if it has undergone such radical changes... I am really glad you find the photos interesting!

Visited Sachsenhausen yesterday, and it was well worth the visit. About a 1 hour S-bahn ride from the center of Berlin. Oranienburg, the city where it's located, was also a nice place to visit.

Most of my pics are very similar to those posted in '09 by straydog .
