Thanks for the photos Adrian, just found out my girlfriends auntie took Harry up in a hot air balloon for his 102 birthday, i believe they became quite good friends, meeting through the Western Front Association.

On remembrance sunday they spoke to Henry Alingham and said 'an old soldier never dies' he replyed if my memory is correct 'i've been trying to find a way for years'

Both names remain unlikely to be forgotten in our history

Thanks for posting this. The service seems like a fitting tribute for this man, the last of all those millions and millions who fought in the trenches of the Western Front.

              Hi Adrian,

Is it ok if I use some of your photographs on other websites? Everyone should enjoy those high quality pictures from a special event.

              Kind regards,
              Paul

A very memorable thread, thank you for posting such poignant and excellent (and large) pictures. This was certainly one time when I was quite content to wait as they loaded onto my monitor. They really allow the rest of us to "participate" in the remembrance instead of our own otherwise limited way. So much better than a dry headline link about such a gallent gentleman.

                      Thanks again.

                      Will.

Great thread. Think of all this man has seen in his lifetime. The First World War seems like an event so lost in time, it is hard to believe that someone who was actually there, in the trenches walked among us up until a short time ago. Truely the end of an era.

Thank you for all your comments, it was a memorable day and one which I'm glad to say I witnessed first hand.

My next comment may seem a little strange but I have been in conversation via PM about use of the photographs above and their use on a specific website.
Just to clarify, I do not mind them being used on other websites and they can be used for any purpose.

Just in addition to everything said above - is it tue that Harry's medals were stolen and sold off by his son, and were they ever recovered, or are thet still out there somewhere?
