    Any members from the CHG?

Howdy folks I was wondering if there are any forum members who are or were part of the CHG in CA? I use to be a member with the 1st LAH about 18 years ago when Gary Harper was commander, but left the Group for personal reason. Was thinking of re joining even if it's just on the sidelines for support.

I was in the CHG in the early 90s as well,
started out in the LAH , moved to Hohenstaufen and then due to location finished with 21st PZ.

I'm on the east coast now and really couldn't tell you anything about the club these days.
    Best of luck

So then you were part of Garys unit then? I left in 92. I've kept tabs on the Group from the website and seen they've grown guite with more units and vehicals.... I remember when Hohenstaufen was formed... Whats your name? You might have been in the LAH when I was in it.

LOL when I was in the CHG there were only a few vehicals, 2 US jeeps a US half track (when it was running) Garys 36 Ford and Borgward and his BMW when it was running. My last year with the CHG I did have Howlands Kuble and there were 2 SdKfz (one for the LAH and the other for the HG) .Hohenstaufen just got thier Dodge 1 ton and I think they had a Chang (repro BMW) or was it the HJ? There was a M3 that use once till it broke down at Golden Eagle Ranch and was stored at Garys place for awhile that we were trying to get the radial engine running again but that went back up to Buena Park to the Museum. Oh and we had 3 cannons 2 of the Garys (US 37mm and Pak 36) then Orlins Pak 75.
From what I've seen on the web site there's quite abit more but somethings seemed to have gone.

I was in Gary's unit for a bit. I left in the Summer of 1991 to go to Hohenstaufen so we had to have been in at the same time.
The 9th at the time I was in had the Citroen staff car and a 222 and that was about it- the Stug or whatever else came long after I was gone from the hobby.
Jim Camerio came about with the LAH again about the time I left the CHG (for work reasons, I didn't have the time to devote to it)
Now that I remember we did very briefly have a Chinese BMW but it when back to Virginia when it's owner was transfered after about two or three events.
It was so long ago it's hard to remember now.

I remember the Mettler... I've forgotten alot of names over the years except for a few: John Marcatello (not sure if correct) he was a nice kid while he was in the 1st SS till he started up the 12th then I don't know what happen to him. Ron Lane, Orlin Kist, Juan Gonzalas, Gary Archer, Jim Howland, Dale Landers, Dave Inglett, Joe Swanson (not a member but he use to supply blanks and rentals) Damon Hitchcock, and of course the person who's friendship I highly regarded Gary Harper. These are folks I liked and will always remember.
I've got some photos of the of the Chang as well as some of the vehicals we had back then, I'll post them as soon as I find them.

Trying to remember all this stuff- most of my photos got lost in a move years ago.
There was one chang in the 12th and for a short time one in the 9th- I think this one came from the LAH - the owner's name was Dan (I can't remember his last name) and he was in the Marines and he moved back to Virginia to retire.
Last I heard John Marketello was still in the 12th (I saw him in 2003 at work when I made a delivery where he was working)
Gary Archer is still doing the Airborne thing- I see him on Facebook every now and then.
Dale Landers and Damon Hitchcock went to the 9th at the same time I did and then Dale helped start the 21st PZ and Damon last I heard was doing Falschrim (But it's been years since I heard from him)
You didn't used to live in Clairmont, did you?
(Trying to remember LAH Members, there was Mike Pitt, Victor, the younger Damon, Dan, Dale, Damon H. and Monty and I know I'm forgetting a few other names)
I remember Joe swanson too- good times.
I think Mark Mettler moved back to Texas sometime in all this for his family business.

Hey Art, yes I use to live in Clairmont when I first started out with Gary Harpers unit the moved to North Park and now in Oceanside since 92. I forgot Dans name as well as Pitt, Victor, and Monty. I saw Marketello on an episode of Mail Call a few years ago as well as Gary and Juan.
I've been doing pretty good with myself over these years can't complain. I had heard that after Gary spent more time doing the Gordon highlanders the LAH kind of went by the wayside and folks went thier different ways. been thinking about getting back into it since I've still got 90% of my gear in a trunk and closet. Of course I can't get back into the uniforms anymore (they seem to have shrunk) But I still collect from time to time.

I met Mark Mettler in Texas in the late 80s or early 90s, I remember him because he had an absolutely gorgeous original 5 button M-40 Heer tunic that he cut all of the original insignia off of and added reproduction Waffen SS stuff so he could reenact in it. This nearly made me sick even though an original was bringing less than a Janke at that time.
The are people here who would have straggled him if they had seen what he did to that tunic.

Camarillo is still around, but he's only really involved with the LAH as sort of an "elder statesman" from what I can tell. The LAH itself isn't even in the CHG any more, and there is some sort of a rift between the LAH (namely Jim Camarillo from what I can tell) and the CHG. The LAH has moved over to the RPS. Most of all this history predates my involvement in the local reenacting scene, so I can't even venture a guess as to what happened.

I was in the LAH for a whopping one event before deciding to go full time Heer. However, I am close friends with the assistant unit leader. If you want, PM me with your info and I can get you back in touch with the group.
