    Medal of Honor holders

Out of curiousity I was wondering how many people have actually met or know Medal of Honor holders.
Personally, I have met three in my life and shook their hands while I have seen a couple of others from a distance at gun/militaria shows.
I met Roy Benavides in the 90s (he died a couple of years later) and another one (I cannot remember his name now, he is a Black man from around Angleton Texas, I think he was a medic in Vietnam) and Sammie L. Davis. It was Davis that was actually shown being decorated by LBJ in the movie "Forrest Gump" with Tom Hanks' head superimposed.
Aside from seeing some at gun shows, is it unusual to have met three in their lifetime?

It may be unusual to have met three MOH recipients out of coincidence. Were you trying to meet them? What were the circumstances?

I attended a MOH convention/dinner many years ago hosted by the movie star (and WWII vet) James Stewart. I sat at a table with a few of them and the wife of one took me around the various tables having MOH recipients sign my book (I was 11 years old at the time so they were very receptive to me). One was Gen Jimmy Doolittle. In 1994 I had the opportunity to visit Peleliu with two MOH recipients (Gen Ray Davis and Col Everett Pope). Since then talked with another on the phone (Art Jackson).

Probably more than you wanted to know. Eric

I met Benavides and the Black medic at a ceremony honoring a Civil War veteran in Galveston Texas and met Sammie L. Davis at a demolition derby in Southern Illinois. Davis is an avid fan of demo derbys.

This fellow was my Wife's Great Uncle:

He came from a big family, and although I did not get to meet him personally, I do get to hear some great stories from his remaining family members. My Wife recalls him at many family gatherings, but along with many of her relatives, has never truly grasped the honor of which he was bestowed . . . they are "simple folk" from the country, and it seems like much overdone attention to them. They tell me that Carl felt the same way as well . . .
