The Destruction of an Elite American Regiment - 442 RCT

Hello Jürg,
Thank you for a well-done story of the 442 RCT in their costly and bloody battles to breach the German-Franco border. I especially liked the past and present pictures of the mapped battle area. For Europeans, it is one of many American stories of her 2nd class citizens in her wars.
The 442nd Regimental Combat Team was literally destroyed in the Vosges due the miscalculation and inexperienced General of the 36th Division (Dahlquist) . He was over-zealous and wanted to be the first American General to enter the Third Reich (US 36th Division). Unfortunately, writer Sinclair Lewis only son was killed in his pusuit to reach the Reich. Even in the 1950's, the 442 RCT white officer's refused to salute Dahlquist in a parade (Pence, Single).
It would take 4-5 month to re-fill her depleted ranks for the next battle in Italy.
Unwanted by Eisenhower for D-Day (Normandy) - but earmarked for the slugfest Rhineland Campaign.
Follow the steps of the 442 RCT and 100th Battalion - where the Purple Hearts grow on trees.

Amended version - more details on the trapped unit

Dear all

After I got detailed facts on the Lost Battalion point of view and their brave stand against the Germans provided by the son of the former commander 1st Lt. Marty Higgins, I re-wrote the story of the relief of the Lost Battalion. I also included more facts about the daring missions flown by the 405 FS to re-supply the oufit.

Thank you for reviving this thread which I had not seen earlier when you posted. I want to say thank you for the time you took to put this thread together, even though it was a few years ago when you posted this thread, and a explanation with the posted photos. Some of us may never be able to visit these battlesgrounds to pay our respect, however what you have put together is the next best thing to remember what happened.
