From a War Between the States (or War Against Yankee Aggression, as we-uns call it down heah) event long ago ...

We were camped at the Shiloh National Battlefield for a NPS living history event - set up a campaign-style camp, do drill and musket firing demonstrations, etc. I arrived in the middle of the night and just threw down my blanket roll when I found my pards, and didn't know anything about the surrounding area.

At dawn the next day there was a dense ground fog, but as the sun rose it started to burn it off. We noticed that way off in the distance, there was a bright spark of something gold shining through the fog, but we couldn't tell what it was. So we walked over to find out.

As we appraoched we could see that it was one of the battlefield monuments. This was a bronze statue, set on a low pedestal. The statue was one of those female Victory-type poses, with clothing draped so that the figure was semi-nude. The pedestal was low enough so that visitors could stand on it and reach the statue.

And the gold spark? It was the sun shining on the bright bronze where visitors had rubbed the statue's exposed breast shiny!

      Greg,
So I assume that you helped keep that bronze boob shining?

        Chet,

I was a Rebel soldier and it was a Yankee monument, of course I helped it along some!

        Best,

We were doing a living history at the site of a former POW camp for DAK soldiers in Alabama. We had posted a sign nearby which read "WWII display". A school bus of kids drove up with their teachers. One of the teachers walked up and asked, What does "W W Eleven" mean.
