    Today, 16 December....64 years ago

On 16 December 1944, the battle of the Bulge started at 5.30am.

As a collector of BotB paper stuff, living in Belgium where the fighting took place and fascinated by this battle since I was 6 orso, this is a special day to me.

Each day from today on, I read about the things that happened on the same days, 64 years ago. I do this each year as a remembrance.

And in my thoughts, I am with those who didn't return to their homes: american or german...
    May they rest in peace.

Thanks for starting this thread Nico.

I agree, lest we forget those who didn't return to their family, from both sides that is!

    The madness of war

    RIP to all the fallen.

Amen to all of the above. Very sobering thoughts of what was started on this day and the sacrifices and suffering that so many endured from this day on in 1944.

          Nico,

I was thinking of this day too, as The Battle of the Bulge is a part of my collectingfield.

          yours

            Nico

Well done Nico C !!, I was there last September and found it amazing "the history that is", also you feel for those soldiers on both sides that spent those terrible cold nights in their foxholes (-40 to -50 degrees) woundering if they would make it back.

May they rest in peace !!

A little under 3 hours to go for Kampfgruppe von der Heydte to lift off. 12:00 the Ju-52s planes get off the ground. The lack of joint training between pilots and jumpmasters and ground winds of 36 miles hour make for a very difficult night jump.

I just read a letter from a survivor and POW from the front line units that had no choice but to give way to the German onslaught. He was shipped to Dresdan and lived to go home.

There was a man from my hometown, a little town of less than 1,000 that had been captured at the Battle of the Bulge but was released by the Germans when they retreated. In later years he became a chronic alcoholic and I bought the only two items that he brought home as war trophies, a HJ armband that he said he took from a POW and a silver German coin with a swastika on it. Got them both for $8.
He died in the 80s as a result of his drinking habits.

                    Battle of the Bulge

Hello Nico - Hi to All,

thanks for starting this thread - I'm also never forgetting this time of the year when the Battle of the Bulge raged over the hills of snowy Luxembourg and Belgium...
Every year this is my special time to think about what happened up there and to remember those who fought there during the winter of 1944/45.
The BotB is my main collecting field.
I often visit the battle-sites in winter - a very special feeling walking through the woods in the Ardennes now......
