    Trips to Volgograd (Stalingrad)

Can anyone recommend a good tour operator who puts together all-inclusive trips and tours of Stalingrad (now Volgograd of course)? Going there is something I've always wanted to do.

    Thanks

    Chris

So.. CPB, how much are you planning to throw at this trip?? Now i am curious. I just have to propose a trip to Russia to the old Lady... But that is a great idea!

              stalingrad

Went to Kiev and Moscow by train last year (no travel agents or tour guides), enjoyed the museums etc, however scary train journies! The language is a major problem and a guided tour would be the sensible option. Let me know how you get on and the price of your trip, may consider it myself!

                Hi,

A trip to Stalingrad is also of great interest to me.

Earlier this year I done some idle research and found that I couldn't fly there direct so I was looking at flying to Moscow then getting another plane or the train down to the city. But that is as far as I got.

I too would be very interested to see what is the best way to get there is and how much I would need to spend.

                Cheers

                Ian

I'll have a look into it. I looked briefly a few years back and it was getting on for nearly a grand for a 3 or 4 day all-inclusive package flying from the UK (I think direct). Things may have calmed down a bit since then. I'll let you know how it goes. It would be one hell of an experience.

                    Volgograd (Stalingrad) airline cost

I go 2-3 times a year and if you buy your airline tickets 6-12 month’s ahead time and go in the off tourist season, you can get some great deals.

My last two trips, May and September of this year cost from LAX (L.A.) to Moscow for $800 (Roundtrip) and $240 from Moscow to Volgograd (Roundtrip). $1040 to fly to the other side of the planet, 11 time zones, dirt cheap!

I recommend going in mid September, most of the tour groups are gone and you are there to experience the weather/feel during the early part of the street fighting.

Gentlemen i was involved in running Battlefield Tours to Stalingrad a few years ago and have been to the City quite a few times, last time was in Sept 2006 for the " Namen fur Rossoschka " Ceremony to the MIA of Stalingrad organised by the Volksbund on 9th Sept 2006.

We were charging £1000 plus flights for a week in the City which was very reasonable compared to some of the other prices you will see. I now run tours to Kursk / Crimea / Normandy etc.

Basic rules are don't try it on your own if you don't speak or understand Russian when you get into South East Russia ( unlike Moscow ) very little English is spoken and all roadsigns etc are in Russian so you wouldn't even get out of the airport. Therefore a local guide is a must and the one we used is without doubt the best and most reliable in the City, i say that without hesitation.

Easiest route is flight to Moscow then Aeroflot to Volgograd return ( no direct flights ) , you can do the train but it is quite expensive and will take up your valuable time in the City.

There are only 3 Hotels in the City which are good by western standards and some which are like the NKVD Prison !! So you have to get the right ones

If anyone needs anymore details let me know via PM or i'll post them here,

                      regards

                      Paul

My cousine was killed in Rostov, 1943. His grave never recorded or found. Are there any trips to the battlefields of Rostov?? I would go as soon as there was a plan. I speak no Russian and have no idea to get there. Is there a program?????

Russian/Ukrainin trains are corrupt as f***! Stumbled into a massive ciggie smuggling ring and the guard on the train was in on it!!
