German Military Cemetary in West Hungary – Böhönye

Out of the 3 main Collective Cemetaries in Hungary, my friend Herr Landser would like to introduce, the one on the West side of the country.

The grave of 2080 german soldiers who fell in the last offensive of the German Wehrmacht and SS, - Unternehmen Frühlingserwachen. Spring, 1945.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operati...hlingserwachen

After the agreement between the German Bundeswehr and the Hungarian Authorities, in 1990. the Relocation Cemetary of Böhönye has been established, which basically became the restplace of those German Soldiers, who have been buried all around the county in scattered graves. In the first step, the 300 fallen bergkamerads of the 1. Gebirgjägerdivision have been relocated here from the city’s public cemetary.
The names of the soldiers can be found on the crosses. 4 soldiers have 1 cross. Those who have been burried unknown or the soldiers who were missing in action, their names can be found on the granite plates. Peace be upon them!

In the city of Böhönye at that time a military hospital was working, probably this indicates the location of the cemetary.

            Thanks Ace! Yes R.I.P!

they were almost all 18-21 years old...

Here's the map of the offensives exactly, and the location of the cemetary. If anybody is planning to visit, I'll post the coordinates, since it's very much hidden.

I haven't written yet, but out of the 2080 soldiers, there were some hungarian Honveds, too.

Christian, great pictures. I could not help noticing on the first pictures of the granite marker with many names, there seemed to be Slavic muslim sounding names, possibly Bosnian?

Can anyone tell me if there were any Bosnian muslim units involved in this action?

                      J

Very touching pics, they were all oh so young, most of them. Looks like a nice well kept cemetary, hope the lefties stay away from it.
Are there any cemetaries like this in Roumania?
