    USS North Carolina commissioned

The submarine was christened a year ago and has spent the past year going through sea trials.

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- For the fourth time in history, a United States Navy submarine will bear the name of the Tar Heel State. The Navy commissioned the USS North Carolina on Saturday in Wilmington.

The name is a source of pride for many of North Carolina's residents and leaders but few have more pride than Admiral Kirkland Donald, a North Carolina native who's serving on the submarine.

"When you see a ship that has that flag on the sail of it right now and just understanding the connection with history and the pride the people of this state show, it's just, you can't help it, but be very, very proud and excited,” he said. “It sends chills up your spine."

As usual the press has screwed up things again... I think they meant to say that it was the 'fourth Navy ship' to be named the North Carolina, not the 'fourth submarine'... the last ship that I know of was the battleship; however, they might have named a cruiser after that and before this. And another mistake is about the admiral... commanders command submarines, not admirals. He might command the flotilla or division, but he isn't going to be the commanding officer of a single submarine. The media doesn't know it's a$$ from a hole in the ground when it comes to the military.

They put some of the teak from Battleship North Carolina in the Sub. There's a online video of the comissioning. I got from http://www.islandgazette.net
