New E Co. 506th PIR Monument near Foy - Bastogne

    New E Co. 506th PIR Monument near Foy - Bastogne

    This past weekend I was at the Ciney show and we spent the night in Bastogne. On Sat. I went to visit the woods above Foy and found a new monument for E Co. 506th PIR that was put in since my trip there last year. the monument is on the Bastogne side of the hill as you drive from the big memorial and museum.

    Afterwards we detected in the woods, but it has been hit hard so very few non-ferrous signals thus very few cartridges etc. There are still a lot of artillery fragments to find, I guess I could have dug 1000 if I wanted to. It looks like people have dug all of the fox holes out to below 1944/45 depth and probably dug big holes where there never were fox holes. Next time I think I will try a little farther away from this "famous" set of woods.

          The "Finds" ... wow!

          Next time I will try a little farther away, I just wanted to get a couple BoB relics to add to my boxes of rusty stuff collection.

            But, the trip was worthwhile. Here are a couple M24's with fragmentation sleeves I picked up at the Ciney Militaria. Wait until you see the cleaned versions.

                Although its a nice monument this angers me. I don't see the need to glorify a small unit all because a tv series was made about them. I couldn't imagine how vets from the 505th or the 507th and other units who participated in the same actions would feel. This whole stigma of the 506th, Easy Co just pisses me off. Sorry for the rant.

                  I did not build this monument ...... only took the pictures of it.

                  I had no idea that honoring any unit that served in combat would make someone mad regardless of whether it was for the defense of Bastogne or for the Berlin Airlift.

                  Anyone who has served knows that not everyone gets all of the glory they deserve, let those who do enjoy their day in the sun. (I served 20 years active duty so I do know what I am talking about there).

                  I will be sure not to take anymore pictures of E. Co. 506th PIR monuments should I see them.

                    Well that is true.

                    While I appreciate a monument being raised to these heroes, it is actually out of place and should have been erected in honor of all the members of the 101st that fought and died in this area. The 501st is one that has been glaringly left off this monument.

                    While I applaud the effort, it would have been nice if the people that came up with the idea would have included the others. How would you feel if you had fought here and lost many of your friends only for them to NOT be recognized.

                    I am waiting for the day when a monument is erected at every location a member of E/506 took a dump. I mean this as no slight to these men whatsoever. It is just that credit should be given to ALL the others on an equal share.

                    And you are correct to ask, "what about the 82nd?" Yeah, what about them? More missions, more jumps, more action from beginning to end. What if it were the 82nd who were in the place of the 101st in Bastogne? Would they get the recognition that the 101st now enjoys? I think so. I believe that it was the defense of Bastogne that brought the 101st into the eye of all of America back at that time and was what really helped make them the American icon they are today.

                    Keep taking pictures Brad. It is just that there are some who have been studying and interviewing Airborne soldiers for many years, before BoB, and it is those who feel that many of the others have been left out due to the vagaries of Hollywood.

                    I think that many of the members of E/506 have represented very well for the entire Airborne community.

                      Well, I would be willing to pitch in some $$ to help build a monument to honor ALL 101st ABN who fought in Bastogne. I myself served with the 101st ABN at Ft. Campbell Ky. from 1985 - 1989 so personally I think it is a good idea to honor all of them. I was still happy to see this monument since there are no other monuments that I saw in this area.

                      I have not been to Normandy in many years, but plan on going back soon. as I recall a large part of the drop area for the 82nd and 101st is sort of like a giant memorial to them all. When I was there in the 1970's almost every light post in the villages had alternating 82nd and 101st flags hanging on them.

                          Sparky hit the nail on the head. It should be a monument to ALL who fought not just a separated unit who's been glorified by Hollywood. If memory serves me right this monument was erected with support from the production team from BoB. I also agree that the production has given light to the Airborne community as a whole, but if you go to any re-enactment the amount of 'jumpers' (and I use the term very loosely) outnumber any LEG unit because of BoB and Saving Private Ryan. My rant is nothing against the men of E Co, 506 PIR, but what about all the other ones who died in the same aea.

                          Brad Posey, I know you only took the pictures I wasn't accusing you, sorry if it came off that way. Thank you for sharing them, it is a nice monument indeed, please don't feel slighted by my comment. I too am a serving member in the forces, and I'm also a qualified jumper.

                            No problem, We are thinking along the same lines. I just wanted to show everyone the new monument I saw this past weekend.

                            I do agree that BoB and SPR have really changed the way people collect, re-enact and generally think about about the war, but that is their problem. I still enjoyed the movie and have not lost the big picture that there were many others who also deserve credit.
