    Lost warship's nemesis found

    Hi Guys,
I didnt quite know where to put this for your information so it is here.
Here is a link to an article on the finding of a German Merchant intruder that was sunk off Western Australia during 1941 after sinking with all hands the Australian ship Sydney, i'm sure you all know the story.
Well now it is found, and the search team SHOULD find the Sydney hopefully soon.

    With respect,

I don't know what I could have been doing to have missed this news Brad. Just wonderful to hear and hopefully we are getting closer to finding the Sydney.

Isn't it amazing the German Navy was operating way over here?
Did you sell your DD helmet Mark? I love it but too much of a helmet for me.

Looking fwd to seeing the pics and footage of the wreck.
Although I think ppl won't learn too much, the German ship did use guns and torpedoes to sink Sydney, and the coming pcs will prove that and not much else.

The HMAS Sydney has been found by the way!

          BREAKING NEWS!!!
It was just announced here in Australia that they have found the wreckage of HMAS SYDNEY...
The Australian Prime Minister announced that the SYDNEY has been found approx 10 nautical miles from the Kormoran.

          http://au.news.yahoo.com/080316/2/1666a.html

This is incredible news for the families of the 645 crewman lost. Perhaps a few answers can be found about why so many were lost without trace.

More news and pics when I can get them.

One nauticle mile equals 1,852 meters so 12 nauticle miles equals 22.224 KM

This is a very intresting story. As a young boy I read of the German raider's exploits and was amazed that one of them was able to take down a cruiser in a fight to the finish. Sadly there were no survivors form the Sydney to tell the story. Only the German survivors gave their account of what transpired. Inrestinlgly their account of the battle as well as the location was met with skepticsim. Seems they were correct at least considering the location. Reguardless, I am sure Australia finds great comfort and closure in what is considered their worst maritime disaster.

Amazing. I have grown up hearing about the Sydney. I hope more can be discovered about what actually happened all those years ago.

They found the Kormoran to guys...

To be honest I'am more impressed that they found the raider ship that took down a cruiser then about finding the cruiser itself...

The plan had always been to find both ships and survey them

Those German auxiliary warships were heavily armed and pretty fast for a ship their size. And the one big thing they had was surprise! Within minutes, large guns, smaller guns, AAA and torpedoes could be broken out and used... many times before an unsuspecting victim could react. These auxiliary warships had almost the equivilent power of the pocket battleships... they could out-gun cruisers and outrun everything else. Look at what the Atlantis did during her time at sea...

Yes but for us its because it an Australian ship. Of course people are interested in the Kormoran but there were a lot of Australians who died on the Sydney and a lot of families who want to know what happened. More interest in the fate of Australian soldiers than German ones over here.

It is the fact that of the 645 crew on the SYDNEY, not one survived, no bodies were found in the area, not one. 645 young men missing compared to approx 70 of the Kormoran's 279 crewmen killed.
Finding both ships is amazing but hopefully being able to give some indication of why NO AUSTRALIAN'S survived this battle and why NO AUSTRALIAN BODIES were found.
That is more significant to me.

Read in the paper today that a Kormoran survivor put the lack of bodies found down to sharks. They were adrift for over a week before being picked up and saw heaps of them.
And happening on that northwest coast does not surprise me.
Quite a few Kormoran survivors settled in Aus too after the war, I wonder how many?>

Yes, there are a lot of very big and no doubt hungry sharks along this coast.
I have seen TV footage of feeding frenzies of sharks along this coast AND the community of 'Shark Bay' is right there as well.

This story interests me so much because it is so close to home.

Authorities are at the moment looking for a grave/remains of a possible sailor who ended up on Christmas Island, thinking he may be from the Sydney.
Do a Google search for the island and see how far away it is.
