Great Escape Veteran dies aged 92

Hi Guys, just sadly read that Sqd Ldr "Jimmy" James has passed away.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/s...re/7198062.stm

I had hoped to meet him last year, but ill health prevented him from attending the event. I had seen him on many TV programmes about the Great Escape.

    Cheers, Ade.

There were 2 movies made about the Great Escape... one with Steve McQueen and the second with Christopher Reeves. The second I think I like better it uses the actual names of the escapees and continues after the escape and the tracking down and convicting the people involved in the murdering of the 50 men. Just how accurate the second is I really can't say

That is very sad news indeed.

This man is without compare. Howard Tuck commented perfectly on the BBC News site......I could not add any finer words than those myself.

Jimmy James was due to accompany us on our visit to Stalag Luft III at Sagen in Poland in 2006 however, he was unable to attend due to his wife being unwell. Thus I was not able to meet this fine gentlemen.

I strongly recommend that anyone with an interest in the history of WWII read Jimmy James book 'Moonless Night'.......

            Regards Richard.

A history that few will ever experience!

Today we complain about small things in society because we have never experienced the hard life.

It is sad to report that by and large, the passing of 'Jimmy' James went with little or no coverage at all in the British media (Independant newspaper aside)

It seems our media is more interested in the latest saga of Amy Winehouse and her 'battle' with herion addiction or the latest verbal atrocity commited by Britney Spears........

                The mind boggles.

                Regards Richard.

Thought you guys would like this:

                  http://www.kerman94.com/tunnelharry.html

I met one of the American vets that was a bombardier from a B-24. I have forgotten his name now but he lived in Alabama. He commented on how the 'Great Escape' was accurate on the compound and tunnel stuff but did not understand why they amalgamated the characters, turning several into one or leaving out others he thought deserved mention. He said the Steve McQueen character was completely ficticious. Steve

Jimmy James death was reported on the BBC website, and included video of a flypast by a Tornado.
