I too think it very doubtful that the untersturmfuhrer is a First War vet - and his decorations mark him as a Second War combat soldier. In any case, there are images of W-SS personnel wearing glasses in combat -for example, a hauptsturmfuhrer leading an assault troop through the tank ditch at Kursk (see Spezzano's pictorial series on Kursk).
My guess is that W-SS personnel requiring glasses for minor correction only - and who could still function if they were lost or broken- could serve in combat roles.
Certainly a number of senior W-SS commanders wore glasses.

The pre war recruiting booklets for the ss vt clearly said that "Brillenträger" would not be accepted as members for the ss vt. However, the T units obviously didn't have these high standards as well as the Allgemeine SS of course and a number of members were transfered from the Allgemeine and T to the VT. In the early stages only chance or connections would allow you to become a VT member when you had bad eyesight, take von Ribbentrop's son who was a member of the LAH and reportedly had very bad eyesight as an example for someone who obviously used his connections.
Later in the war it didn't matter at all I think when you look at what they have accepted then. The standards were generaly very low for obvious reasons during the later stages of the war.
