I wrote them a short e-mail last night with my concerns for this type of journalism as well as a note that I had been offended by the article. I promptly received the following courteous reply from the Editor In Chief this morning.

      QTE

      Hi Erik,

Thanks for taking the trouble to email us. The story was provided to us by a freelance agency and published in good faith. However, you make a valid point and I have removed the offending lines.

Thanks again for getting in touch and I apologise for any offence caused to legitimate collectors.

The story is true. I do not know whether they have really managed to smuggle one tank, but they were indeed captured when trying to remove one tank from its place, burried near the border. I am really sorry they were captured. I do not give a **** for their intentions - sure they do it for the money, but the result should be - one historical vehicle saved.

Those tanks have always been known. Since 1989, all kinds of enthusiasts, collectors and historians have tried to start a talk about those tanks, to have them saved. The Ministry, the Museum and all possible institutions did one big NOTHING. 101 % lack of interest. And after the border bases were closed, the tanks remained absolutely abandoned. In result, NOW - in the last 2-3 years - most were cut by illegal scrapdealers. Torches, trucks - bye bye tank! Remember the popular photos of a Pz IV half buttied in the ground? Well, since this summer, only parts of the floor remaining, all else cut and gone.

So, I wish there were more thieves like that major and the two Germans. And I wish they were sucessfull The f**** idiots responsible for those vehicles do not try to save them, do not guard them - have left them to destruction, but now the three men will be criminals. Yes for sure they are criminals - but they are not the only ones in this story!

                Saw this

AFP - Tuesday, December 18 08:58 pmSOFIA (AFP) - Police in Bulgaria arrested two Germans and a Bulgarian army officer for stealing a World War II tank and attempting to thieve another, Bulgaria's defence ministry said Tuesday.

The first tank disappeared between October and December 13 and is still missing, while the second one only had a few parts stolen off it, the ministry said.

Investigators suspect the armoured vehicle or its parts may have been smuggled to Germany.

According to the Standard newspaper, the three suspects wanted to sell the Maybach tanks to German collectors.

The vehicles had laid half buried since World War II near Bulgaria's southeastern border with Turkey.

                Probably these...

                    Hello All,

Theodor, what was the legal base for saying "stolen"? Tank on military ground? Tank belonging to the state?

How does this situation look like in other countries?

In Poland it looks like this:
Tanks being burried are all the property of the state (of course only burried tanks survived ) . State is a s...t worth owner - doesn't care about such things. If the tank is found, it's only the trouble for museums and local admnistration, trouble with money etc. I've been trying to interest some museums in similar things - reaction was "if you bring it here (for your own money) - we may take care about it". Collectors have the money, but it's very difficult (like "impossible") to buy anything from the state. Solution - scrap collectors! No tank - no trouble! It's also illegal, but as a scrap - metal quickly dissapears.

Fortunatelly, no one here associates "heavy equipment collectors" with neo nazis.

                    regards

The tanks belong to the State, to the Ministry of Defense. During the Cold War, the whole area was military, closed. To walk near the border, you had to get special papers, permits, etc., otherwise you will be arrested or even possibly shot. The tanks were military bunkers in that closed area, ready for defense in case of Turkish invasion.

However after 1989 things changed. The border area was opened for visiting, minefields removed, a few years back the military bases down there were closed, no longer needed.

and the tanks became abandoned. Still property of the Defense Ministry, but noone to care for them. And little by little almost all are scrapped. And two stollen IF there is a first tank, already in Germany, and IF it is returned, it will be put in some of the museums, for sure not back as a bunker! I hope this current events will trigger some reaction, for what is left there to be saved and transported to museum storage, before the illegal scrap hunters reach it!

That's a great article Nick, thanks for posting it.

here is a Detektor web.cz thread:

                            http://www.detektorweb.cz/index.4me?...mm=2&xb=2&vd=1

Can someone answer me this? Having read the Tom Clancy novel "The Bear and the Dragon" I remember it describes in the early chapters the Chinese army invading and crossing the border from Manchuria into Russia and the Russian defenders returning fire from static pillbox positions using the gun turrets of heavy WWII era tanks such as the KV1, but also German tanks. The whole thing was fiction of course but it was entertaining, and I was wondering if there is any truth to the story. I know German tank turrets, (especially Panthers) were actually utilized in such a manner in various places, but did the Russians dig in such turrets at that place, and if so are there still dug in there?
