    Mediaeval Re-enactor killed by Lance

Strange but true - I'm sure that's how he would like to have gone...

I was at a Civil War reenactment about 20 years ago and a reenactor got drunk, laid by the fire to keep warm instead of going to bed. The fire went out and he froze to death during the night. I know of a few other deaths at reenactments, mostly from previous health conditions like heart attacks. I don't think I want to die for my hobby.

I believe this is how one of the kings of France died, maybe Louis IX?

Wow, the "splinter" must have gone deeper than his eye socket to kill him, as into his brain. Or, perhaps, he died of infection. Trauma in the eye socket normally doesn't kill someone - just puts their eye out. I also guess it was a rather large "splinter."

I would assume it was an infection. To penetrate that far would me quite strange in my opinion. Maybe I can ask my dad, he works with this sort of thing all the time.

Apparently it is Henry II of France who died that way as well.

The guy died doing something that he loved... I guess that isn't a bad way to go

I would agree. If I were digging in Russia in old bunkers and I blew up, it wouldn't be bad as something else.

Knock on wood that doesn't happen, though!

I don't know. Whether I was doing something I love or not, lingering for a week with my eye gouged out doesn't really seem like an appealing way to die.

Regardless of whether it was a good way to go or not that is a crazy freak accident. I mean what are the odds?
