    FJ monument in Krete

    Hi all

Was looking at this webiste here:

    http://www.fallschirmjaeger-denkmal.de/English.htm

It hadn't been updated for some time and its most current news was that the FJ monument in Crete was under threat.

Does anyone have any more recent news about this monument?

anyone here visited it (or crete)?

    cheers

    Dave

I think those vandals that wrote on the wall of the monument should be ashamed of themselves cause they only shown how stupid they are.
I hope they ll fix the monument and have respect for any Fallen soldier.

          Hi Dave,

last summer in Krete, i carry out a little research in Chania, about the
          Fallschirmjaeger Monument.
When the German Federal Rep. ,join with the Greek Gov., builded the new German Cemetery in Maleme, in the middle of 70's, they stopped to give money, for the Monument. Then the building maintenance was only in the
hands of Fallschirmjaeger Veteran Ass. join with the other FJ Vet Ass. of all
          countryes in the world.
Unfortunately the money was been insufficent for the maintenance (the writing
on the monument in Greek and German, ask for money), and in 2001 a wind storm (i don't belive in that), crashed the
Eagle (the devil eagle as the Greek said), ....and so the Monument had soffered a costant and slow deterioration.
Now the original site is surround of wretched houses ,...mini market and at last.....the nice hill was been cut in half ,from a large coach park!!!!!!!
I hope that this little contribution ,is an help for you.
          Cheers Max.

            Hi,

I don´t understand why after more than 60 years, are people still capable of doing such things...now when most of the witnesses of this battle were passed away.
When the monument was erected, nothing happened at the time, and now...it is really a shame.
In my opinion are local Comunists that are vandalizing the Monument.

            cheers

This sign is not at the cemetery, but on the footsteps on the hill leading to the monument.

                            Hi all

When I was there in 2001 the eagle was in place and the memorial looked pretty good compared with the state its in now

                            Cheers Thomas

                              thanks for the input guys

yes it looks like the monument is in a state of decay

I was hoping that maybe something had been done to get it back to looking good.

I am thinking that the German government does not like such monuments anyhow so doesnt care if this one turns to dust.

as for the story about the storm knocking the eagle off....
