    Digging for relics

Hello all i was thinking the other day about relics, do those who look for relics ever come accross unexploded bombs or mines and if, what are the chances of them exploding . On ebay i see lots of relics and got curious about the the dangers looking for them if any.
And do they ever come across skeletons who have been in the ground for 60+ yrs with their equipment.

    Thank you

A fella I know was digging over in E.Europe somewhere and stepped on a landmine and before he lifted his foot he realized it and then bent down dug around it and it was detroiated so he stepped off and he was lucky nothing happend.

Same guy accidentally hit a stick grenade with a shovel while digging and it started fizzing.bubbling where it got hit. didnt explode

        Hi Guys,

Dont mean to sound like dad here too much.....

Id like to offer a reading from the "Common sense act" as an international Demining and eod advisor on this as to the norm on matters like this. I personally cringe when I see ANYONE on the internet unqualified in basic eod or at least with proper organized eod support, and medical support on hand digging in any battle area, but it happens....Money and curiosity are often much more important. Its entirely at their own risk. For example if someone like we see in russia all the time piling up shells and removing fuses to sell with wrenches and hammers is probably not qualified EOD i.e to identify safe to handle, make items of EO- UXO Free from explosives they may be actually handling and selling, and putting into the mail a LIVE item which could have legal consequences for them, everyone on the way and the buyer if it were to go bang! (fuses being thee MOST sensitive of all as well).Theyre playing with fire even walking into the former battle areas. Just because everyone does it dont make it right. Without getting too technical and giving "advice" which could be held against me if something were to happen while following my advice with no background of eod i can certainly tell you:

        1) Items are not less dangerous because they are old, deteriorated or have been handled by many people.

        2) UXO and other EO (explosive remants of war) can explode at the slightest movement or by other means on its own, i.e weather. EVEN YOUR SHADOW can function certain items

        3) If you find possible UXO-EO, leave it alone, Inform local EOD.

There is a very real possibility to become a modern day casualty of WW1 or whatever war and to become the newest member of the red mist and bone chip society through digging disturbing UXO and EO in former battle areas. Leave them alone and inform EOD.

        Best,

        Pete

Pete, I agree with you to a certain degree. If anything, detroriated munitions (landmines, shells) are even more unstable than they were to begin with. As for induividial munitions, rifle and pistol bullets they are no more dangerous in the ground than in a display case.
