    Going to Berlin

    Hi Guys,

    I'm going for 5 days in Berlin at the end of the week. Could you tell me if there's anything WW1 or WW2 related to be seen ?

      Salut ,

      there is a little guide book recently published for 12 euros that you will find in the biggest book shops - it is in English, it has maps etc ... and if you have not done research about what you want to see , this book is priceless !! a real gem... I'll get you the name by tom,

          CHeck out the Berlin History Museum in the Zeughaus - Hitler's desk, an 88, the globe from the Foreign Ministry, model of the Great Hall...

            Berlin? WW2 related? You're kidding, right? The entire city is basically one giant history book

            I'd highly recommend picking up a copies of "Berlin...Then and Now" and "The Third Reich...Then and Now" by Tony LeTissier. OR, if you're pressed for time and can't get the books before your trip, I'd recommend checking out:

                What are the best WWII museums in the Berlin area? I hear the Luftwaffe museum is pretty good.

                  The Luftwaffe Museum at Gattow (near Spandau) is well worth a visit. It boasts various fantastic exhibits including an Me163 (used to be at RAF St Athan) a replica DFS-230 (owned by a HG vet I think) and loads of other 1st World War to Cold war aircraft. It has a good collection of uniforms on display as well. The bus from Spandau drops you off a little way from the entrance, so you have maybe 1/2 mile to walk...not good if you are with frail veterans.

                  In Berlin near the remains of the Anhalter Bahnof is the "Berliner Gruselkabinett", a kind of walk around ghost train. This is in a very good Luftschutz bunker which in addition to ghostie stuff for the kids (which is upstairs) has a dood exhibition on LS and other bunker types. If you stray out of the exhibition area and find yourself in one of the many empty rooms it is very atmospheric.

                  Also suggest a visit to Karlshorst, which is an S-bahn ride out of the city centre. This was the Offizier Kassino for a Pioneer unit (a training school if I remember) and the architecture is just as you would think of for the period. The building was used for signing surrender documents and is very Soviet-centric, Soviet artefacts dominating in the vehicle park and inside. Still, it is well worth a visit.

                  About an hour from Berlin is Seelow, which has an excellent little museum on the battle for the heights and the wider area (including Halbe) with guides in Russian, German and English. I think out of all the museums I saw whilst I lived in Berlin, this effected me most, as the museum stands on one of the defence lines and is surrounded by Soviet wargraves. It felt very immediate and really humbles oneself
