    Homemade Heel Irons

I have a pair of Swiss low ankle boots I got from Military Tour and thought I would like to try and convert for german use. My problem was that none of the heel irons for sale from the militaria venders would fit the heels. So next best thing was to make my own pair of heelirons. I did a measurement of a pair of irons and they came out to be of 1/4" square stock. After trying to find 1/4" iron metal my brother came up with a great solution... "why don't you get some 1/4" key stock?" And it was as simple as dropping into my local auto parts store and picked up a cpl pieces of the key stock. Next I had friend heat the metal almost white hot and then shaped the key stock into a rough horseshoe shape which I refined the fit the shape of the heels. By allowing the metal to cool slowly it lost it's hardness and was simple to bend to the correct shape. Then I cut them to length, then drilled the holes for the nails and counter-sunk the holes for the nail heads. I have attached a few pics of the hell irons as they were being shaped etc and finally applied to the heels after the rubber layers were removed
