Dear all,
I would like to tell you, that there's an 87 year old gentleman living in Hungary. His name is Istvan M. He was a taylor at the SS until late 1944.
One of my friends was noted about him, and he asked him to make a cap for him. The cap became an early-war bergmütze from good SS material, which was still remaining in his home.
I bought some good frieze in WH color.
My friend visited him once again, and fortunately "Uncle Steve" was still in good health.
When my mate explained to him, that how happy he was with the first hat, and that we would like to ask him to make a few others for us, he had tears in his eyes. He understood, that we are collectors and interested in reenacting, too. He used once again the pattern he had in his head, and made 6 caps for me.
I keep 2 for myself. I have 1 size 55, 2 size 56, and one size 57.
These are of course not exact repros, but hand made items from a former taylor of the German Army! I think the shape of the hats are perfect. The inside was made of some light color material, and light grey leatherish sweat-band. He sew with steel-blueish thread. No buttons yet, though. On the pic, next to the bergmützen, is a Sturm-Miltec M43 hat as a color chart...
