    Cologne

Hello everyone. I'm driving up to Cologne this saturday, call it a mini-citytrip. I plan to see the cathedral, visit the musea, but of course, if possible, I'd like to see something WWII related. I didn't find anything via the internet - checked http://www.thirdreichruins.com for instance, but nada - so I'd like to ask residents, or anyone who knows the city well, if there is something WWII related to be seen in Cologne, or in the city's immediate vicinity. It doesn't have to be spectacular; a building, a remaining eagle, a "here it was" sort of thing ... anything will do.

    Cheers lads!

No natives of the beautiful Köln?

Well anyway, I did manage to find something: the NS-Dokumentationszentrum (NS-Documentation Centre).
    So I'll probably visit that.

There is really nothing to see. A small Gestapo museum which is underfunded and quite boring. A local stamp shop that sells fakes from the window. You cansee where the famous Panther was knocked out by the cathedral, but its not that great.

Indeed, nothing much, at least not WWII related. Oh well, can't win 'em all. Had a very good time all the same.

Thanks for the invitation! I'm home now though, but I'll visit the city again to be sure. After all, it's only a two (and a half) hour drive from where I live; near Antwerp.

Next time shoot me a PM, you have a better chance of seeing the wild homosexual in his natural habitat here in Cologne then let alone something war related. It is one of the gay capitals of Europe If you do ever swing by again, I do know of one local militaria show that is not half bad.

Went to Koln last year. Beautiful city but more Roman history than WWII.

The Roman History here is fantastic. They are building a new stretch of subway and have a little display set up of what they are digging up. Some vases not broken, a whole bin full of broken vase pieces,Pedastels with Roman Numeral Dates,,the list goes on,,and some remenants from the Allied bombings that were buried. This city is actually built on levels of history, and when you dig deep each time period comes up, I love when they do construction

Not my cup of tea really, but the militaria show sounds interesting

I still havent gone to that museum, no need to! The stuff is everywhere just watch a construction site. There is as said before an NS museum, its really sad and the displays include a mothers cross behind glass

I do know a Luftschutz Bunker with the old machinry in it that is abandoned and unlocked. Some other bunkers, some metal detecting spots. etc

I know a kameradschaft meeting every tuesday nex tto my house, that is a bit of fun.

Let me know next time in town.

I have been to Cologne before, but didn't find much of interest either. Netx saturday, we will go again. First shopping for my wife, in the afternoon we will visit a U-Boat vet (U-825) and the widow of a vet (U-93).

Does any of know if there will be any fleemarket or second hand bookshop?

                            Kind regards,

                            Maurice
