i`ve been over to normandy many times and love taking in the history of the place. There are many museums some are better than others. But by far the best one i`ve come across is a little private museum on a little back road at the back of omaha beach. Can`t remember the name of the place, and i haven`t seen it in any of the guide books. It`s not too hard to find though. If you look in any guide book or local map, look for the golf course behind omaha beach. The museum is an old corrigated hanger type building on the opposite side of the road to the golf course, nearest the beach. As i say it`s a little private museum, so no road signs or turist listings and is quite easy to drive past. It has an old US landing craft and a couple of steel bunker emplacements in the car park. Well worth hunting down. It houses a top class collection of german militaria. It`s all displayed like a battle feild set up and it`s not behind glass, you can almost touch it. Great for a close up study and you get the smell aswell.

        Question

        Question:
I attempted to go to Normandy several years ago for the big Anniversary of the landings.
Since so many politicans(Bush,Blair & straphangers) were in attendance we could'nt find any lodgings other than around the British landing areas-and we booked 6 months in advance!
I had hoped to see the American 101st & 82nd. DZ areas but we were unable to move around due to the numerous security for VIP's with road closings .
In short,we gave our lodge reservation to a Brit veterans family & visited Paris instead.
Heard later that very many vets were turned away due to the same thing I ran into.
My question is-are there YEARLY events around June 6 in Normandy?
If so,how could I find out about them and plan another trip?
        Any advice appreciated.
        Thanks.

A small of friends and I were there for the 60th anniversary. Something I tried that was interesting was to wade out into the water waist deep off of a couple of landing beaches and take some pics from that perspective. Obviously, you have to take a change of clothes. Water temp was much warmer than I would have expected. Camera was bagged to avoid any accident. We also avoided the main beach areas on 6 June due to the road closings for the bigwigs and instead went to sites further inland on that day. There were veterans around days before and after, so there were plenty of opportunities to talk with them.

If you want to see some real history go to the church in downtown Bayeux and see the Bayeux Tapestry. It was commisioned in 1083 and describes in detail the history of William the Conquerors family. It is truly remarkable!

Here is a link to a website that describes it. http://www.hastings1066.com/baythumb.shtml
