    Vimy

As a lot of you know it is the 90th Anniversary of Vimy Ridge real soon and there is going to be a contingent approximately 3600 students from across Canada going over, each person representing a fallen Canadian soldier from that battle. I am representing Sgt Thomas Alfred Goodwin of Ontario, a brave man who signed up and gave his life there.

We will be over in Belgium, Holland, and Northern France for about a week, and it is interesting to know that the hotel we are staying at in Normady is about 5 minutes from where the 82nd landed.

good for you,its nice to see students keeping the memory alive
on a sad note i have just returnes from the somme but took a detour through belguim to go to tine cot cemetery.i was appauled to arrive and witness kids swinging on the headstones and jumping up and down the cross of sacrifice .the teacher stood by and watched,so without thinking i walked straight up to them and screamed a load of obscenities at them, the teacher came up to me and asked what was the problem.after giving her a peice of my mind she called all the kids together and warned them about using the cemetry as a playground.
it really saddened me to see such acts from mostly english kids,is this what british society is really comming to.as a brit i am embarresed at the way we portray ourselves abroad.

Vimy Ridge an absolute stunning monument to the memory of the fallen, very sombre.

I agree those schoolkids deserved a good kick up the arse, good on you for ripping into them.

          Hi All,

If some of you are interesting by photos of vimy's area, just let me know....
i'm living at 10kms from the site, so no problem for taking pics. Only after april 9th, because vimy is a restricted area until the date of the cemony.
          Best regards
          Pierre

if im correct vimy is restricted due to an unexploded mine the british laid in 1917 the chamber contains 50,000 tons of anomol which is very unstable.the result if this went of can be seen if you do a google search on lochanger crater in poziers on the somme.truely a magnificent feat to tunnel the best part of a mile underground and lay a huge charge under the enemy front line.as i understand it when this mine was detonated 10,000 germans went up with it.

              Adolf Hitler at Vimy

There are daily reports and features in the Canadian press and on national and local television this week in line with the Vimy commemoration, as well as in other countries I am sure. I would dearly love to be there in France for the ceremonies, but will instead attend those planned here in the nation's capital of Ottawa where I live.

I was interested to read in one of the reports that Hitler once visited the memorial and was duly impressed. Since it did not focus upon victory over Germany, rather on remembrance of the fallen soldiers, he forbade any desecration or destruction of the Vimy memorial.

If anyone has any pictures of Hitler's visit to Vimy, I for one would be very interested to see them.

              Thanks,
              John

                    Two more photos.
Ceremony at vimy would be great. 20.000 persons will be allowed to go near the monument. But in a few days, i'll go and i think it will be more quiet
                    Best regards

                          Well done!
Nothing to do with british kids, but with uneducated kids and I think this is the modern plague.
