    Burial.

The burial of the crew has been shown earlier - this shows the graves after burial , a few weeks later Hattons crew would be buried just in front of them and the same sad scenes would be repeated again , thankfully for the last time.

      Same view today

The thorn bush and tree has grown somewhat larger but have been a silent wittness to change and development .
It has seen F/lt.Hattons crew join the F/lt. Nesbitt / Hailstone crew .Their grave markers have come and gone , to be replaced by the standard Commonwealth War Graves Comission headstone , each the same the world over.

( There is a photo of gerry fellows in the openning pages of the thread).

I was in conatact with Mr. fellows last year who I am happy to say is alive and well.

Equally happy to say that I have been recently put in touch with Mr William Stewart who piloted DD862 when she made her final landing , just had an email from him earlier this evening and have mentioned this thread to him.
I am very sad to say that Mr. Fellows (My grandfather) passed away on Jan 1 2009.

I am in the process of building a website about Castle Archdale, it can be seen here for those interested:

I think a great tribute to all the people as your beloved grandfather.

I copied these out for John and for some aviation blokes on another forum.
The copis not 100% but all things considered not too bad.

                    A 423 Squadron Sunderland , engine fitters/ mechanics at work .

                    Rear row- R.Bockos , J.Creighton,D.Donaldson,H.Duquette, L.Dufton,K.McLeod.
Front row J.Christian L.Bossenberry, Art Lee , Alex Aitkens.

A view towards the Mess Hall , showers and entertainment hall , football pitch in the forground.
Again with the site map this can be found , today largely an empty space.

Bomb scow - worth comparing this to the relic item recoveed from the Lough, which was posted a while back.

Laurence said this photo was taken on "The site of two large hangers before they were built.
The "T" Sheds - which would put this as being the summer of 43.
                    Left to right
Les Bossenberry , Crpl. Eldrose , Bub Caldwell , Don Donaldson , L.Dufton.

The cement mixer pouring the apron surface in the background.
Previous views show the on going changes which existed throughout the war, the base was constantly evolving.

Not sure if this is an official photo or not , it does seem to be very well framed.
                    Above back row left to right , J.Sharpe , L.Bossenberry , R.Books ,L.Abrams.
                    front- L.Dufton , ?? , D.Morris.
                    "The Bomb up crew".

423 Armament section, probably taken at the back of one of the nose hangers or the BOAC hanger.

These came from photocopies but scanning has surrendered some more detail , not fantastic copy but worth it as these are the men who made things happen.

                      Thank You

Many thanks for your well wishes I do appreciate them.

James has been wonderful in his contributions to my website, his photos, along with mine and others combined truly do bring back to life the times at Castle Archdale during the 1940's.

I am especially seeking to speak with any members of U-672 who may still be alive, as well as their families should they possibly have a story/photos to share.

I am posting some pics from my grandfathers collection, this week I will be making copies of the rest of his archives from that time, hopefully sometime next week, I can get some of those posted here.

I don't think these are on,
A SUnderland on the slip way , what are most likely 201 Squadron Sunderlands over the Lough in the Summer of 1945 and some of the hutted accomadation, cold in Summer and freezing in Winter.

The photo below was taken in the poost war years when the base was used occasionally for training purposes , most of the accomadation sites would disappear forever in due course.

Work on Commonwealth War Graves Plots in Irvinestown.

Earlier this week I took out dog down for a run around Castle Archdale - two , now three dry days in a row - this must be the "Summer".

The Commonwealth Plots have been resurfaced - the old top soil and grass has been removed and new soils and grass / turf have been laid.
the work has taken about a week to do and in due course new shrubs and plants will be added.

This work has been lpong overdue and it gives the plots a huge face lift.

These photos taken on consecutive days shows the ground cleared and prepared for the new grass surface which was laid the following day.
