Reenactors and collectors, lets see your Schemels

This thread I thought I would start for anyone who has bought an orignals Schemel, bought a reproduction, or built their own.

My Schemel is one I built in my shop. I used maple. Here are a few pictures of it.

    Stained Schemel

After some research, I noticed in period photos that many Schemels had a "mission brown" or fumed finish. I obtained a water base "Mission brown" stain for the Schemel. Here is the only photo I have at this time, it is an enlarged portion of another photo. I am sorry it is a little grainy.

      My Shemel

Here are pics of my Shemel that my good friend Edgar made for me from plans from Der Erste Zug. Edgar served in the Uboot service during the war. He said this was the type he used in basic training in the barracks. He said some were natural wood color some were grey color and some were white color.

Here is where I got the plans to build it they have plans there for both types of Shemels

        Nicew work

Nice Schemel, thanks for your post. We did a barracks impression a month ago and it gave me a chance to use my Schemel. Although I do take it to battles as well.

          shemels

From what I've been told is that shemels were never used outside they were stritcly a barracks item. You do see alot of people using them in the field with their zelt tents

I have heard that as well, however I have seen numerous period photos of Schemels used in the field. These pictures typically show them used in biovac areas. Look at "God, Honor, Fatherland" by McGuirl & Spezzano, page 13, top left photo, there are two soldiers in the field using a Schemel as a small table. I have seen others, but I cannot find them right now.

They were all recruits for my new unit and I wanted to make sure I wasn't getting any overweight, middle-aged men in my unit. It was strictly for authenticity purposes I assure you.
