    Dead Norwegian SS-soldiers

The remaines of around 130 Norwegian Gebirgjägers of the Waffen-SS are now
    being brought home for identification.
They were fighting against the Russians in 1944 at the Finnish/Russian border and were wiped out .

The remaines have been found on two ridges in the borderarea and have been untouched since the fight ended. As we speak there are many plunderers roaming around and collecting as many things they can get.

The work is under heavy timepressure sas the Norwegian news.

(if anyone have more news please continue the thread)/J

You should get permits to shoot grave looters as a sort of "minutemen". I'd go help dig even in the freezing temperatures.

I was surprised and pleased that several Norwegian papers\news sites highlighted the problem of grave robbing for the collectors market.

Those that buy these ground dug items are the ones that create the market in the first place.
Collecting German award documents, other paperwork and photos relating to Norway and Finland.

I haven't bought any dug stuff, but I'm not saying I wouldn't either. Market creates itself in other ways. There are too many people making a living selling 3rd Reich items (Just do a search on line), and that is why prices are the way they are. Most new collectors that are between the ages os 15-25 years old can't afford anything else but a dug helmet or a medal....
If there were no dealers most items would be still in the hands of the families that had it willed to them. Collectors would just have to work at it to locate the items. But since there are many comfortable collectors out there that rather pay a premium, then the need for dealers is created. And yes, I have made trips to dealers also so I'm not any different

            hi,

may I have a reference of the Norwegian articles on the net? has any Norwegian paper published anything at all on the discovery of the soldiers?
I would not mind reading articles about it even if it were to be in Norwegian.

            Thanx

Please stick to the subject matter.

Memorials to one mans "freedom fighter" or "invader" are not the subject of this thread.

Getting back to the thread in hand. Any soldier, of any country, deserves a decent burial in a marked grave.

                    Cheers, Ade.

It only depends on how you look at these monuments..
Correct: monuments to a soldier who fought (and lost his life) with Nazism.
                      Wrong: monuments to Soviet "occupants".
Decide for yourself but the truth is one.

You are right in your thoughts, with no doubts I say you are correct for yourself. But - as said for yourself, from Soviet/Russian point of view. Yes, the Soviet Union was invaded and liberated itself at the price of great victims.

BUT there is the other point of view - remember there are countries, for which the Soviet Union was a brutal invader and brought only suffering - just like the Nazis did.

The photo that I had originally put - it is a memorial in the town of Russe. Who is he? Someone who gave his life for the freedom of his Fatherland Russia, for his family and friends? Or someone who seed death and tyranny to other countries, who "exported" deadly homicidal revolution? I do not know... I agree with the face that you see on him. But he also has another face

Whatever your point is the fact remains they are people and deserve proper burial.

The point is: I am against of Glorifying the Waffen-SS.

So me saying I'd be out in the snow to bury some men who deserve a proper burial is glorifying them? You edited your post so maybe that is not what you thought I was meaning.
