Dear all.,
Hereby something I want to share with you. In a book regarding the Totenkopf Division I bumped upon this nice document: a report filed by Hauptsturmf******252;hrer Lino MASARIE regarding the recovery of Obergruppenf******252;hrer Theodor EICKE and his medals on 26 February 1943.
The report (in German of course) is very detailed and describes how MASARIE saw EICKE's plane (a Storch) being shot down by enemy-fire. He tried twice to exactly find the spot but only managed the second time to find the remains.
EIKCE's face was almost 'gone' and both his arms were broken. He tried to recover EICKE's medals but could only find his golden party badge, his IC1st class and his silver wound badge.
There were no traces of his KC and EL.
Only some time later a fellow officer found both the KC and the EL in a deserted Russian shelter: they were lying next to a bottle of petrol and a handgrenade and were ready to be blown apart!
Apparantly, did the Russian who 'liberated' the cross not want that he would be taken prisoner with such a trophy in his pockets.
The KC and EL were send in a package together with some half burned maps...to the 'Division'.
Possibly the familly got them later on.....where are both now?
Just curious.....
Best regards,
Coco
