I believe that it's a natural human being need when you're living with death all around you. At least what I could understand with vests (allied, "nazis", WW2, french colonial wars).

I have heard about this for a long time now. Hitler was supposed to be a druggy too, but that's not your topic...

I think the speed did help them a lot. They were able to stay awake longer and fight more focused longer and better on the battlefield. The only problems with using are A) aftermath of the war and B) running out and NEEDING it

Was it in a bright red tin?

If so, it was Scho-Ka-Kola, which has been used forever.

Jerry, Scho-Ka-Kola is a choclate with a very high amount of coffein, not good for children and it's here called Fliegerschokolade.

But that is not related to the Bundes-Luftwaffe.

In WWI the pilots had to breath the exhaust of their engines. Many of them were oiled with ricinus-oil, engines with loss lubrication. Think anyone here can imagine what happens...
The Scho-Ka-Kola at WWI was made with coffein and cocain (!) to stop diarrhea.
