Hi I just watched a program about Albert Speer and his life and I was just wondering how many buildings and monuments he designed for the Third Reich and in particular Hitler are still left standing and where abouts they are ?

funny: im currently reading his books 'Inside the 3rd reich'
he is a complex, intelligent and interesting character. i am not sure how much to believe when i read his books about his time with Hitler.
I am sure that factually it is probably close to the money but Speer seems TOO keen to make out he was a good guy all the time, i dunno, it kind of doesnt come across too believable!
Im sure he really was enthusiastic about what was going on at the time and just as ambitious as the other leading nazis. But after the war he wanted to play down his part and come across regretful. maybe he was, who knows.
anyhow, not sure what buildings of his remain; from memory not many if any. some streetlamps in berlin of his remain.
he did organise the planting of a forest near Berlin in the '30's which still remains today too.Last edited by DaveNZ; 11-20-2006, 04:00 AM.

Speer's buildings
I know that there are a lot of remains in Nuremberg. For example the zepplin field etc.
Further there's off course the olympic stadium, but I'm not sure it was his design....?
I read the book as well and I agree that I think he's not telling the truth on every page....but on the other hand, If you want to save your ass, what would you do.

Recently visited Templehof airport and it really is a magnificent building, I have a couple of pics of the eagle statue at the front entrance. I will track them down and post one.
Regards Richard.Always looking for Luftwaffe Kampfflieger related document groups. In particular anything to Kampfgeschwader 2.

The only things left of Albert Speer building programs are the derelict ruins of the Zeppelin parade field, the arquitect Ludwig Ruff desing the congress hall not Speer, both buildings are in Nurenberg. The experiment for weight distribution and pressure in Berlin for the mega victory arch and some lamp post desing by him for the main Berlin avenue and square. Also if I am not mistaken the Japan embassy in Berlin was desing by Speer and survived more or less the destruction of war.
I would like to know if the atelier Speer desing and built for Josef Thorak in Salzburg-Munich autobahn area still standing since is also survived the war and was an imposing structure.
The buildings of Paul Ludwig Troost had a "better" fate, the art museum and both party and Fuhrer buildings still exist almost intact. The art museum building are in public use, the other two are not.
Hope it helps.

I'm reading Speers book "Erinnerungen" (Inside the Third Reich) from 1969, and it's an amazing book.
Next I'll get Joachim Fests biography of Speer (1999)
There are several books from the WW2 about his buildings, I see them on auctions time to time.Last edited by Jokka; 12-03-2006, 07:42 AM.

It's difficult to believe that anybody could have been a 'Goodie-Two-Shoes' in the top echelon of the Nazis! There are people now even throwing rocks at Werner von Braun because he knew about the slave labor at Dora Concentration Camp. I'd bet a dollar that Speer knew all about The Final Solution and what that entailed. Seeing how many huge armament factories were built all around Auschwitz and other camps.

I believe that Speer was not politically interested until he got his minister posts. He was not active in any political organizations and just did his architecture work for Hitler. When he got power I certainly believe things changed, and he for sure knew about the final solution, but he had no part in either that or other political matters other his works as a minister for Armaments. His use of slave labor was what he went to jail for.
He worked for bad people, but I don't think he was evil.
