NSDAP Braunhaus site - what is going on there?

In Munich recently I strolled by the site of the former 'Braunhaus' and noticed the lot being excavated, revealing the building's foundations.

I have always knows place as an empty lot since my first visit in the '70s. Does anyone know who is sponsoring the digging and what the purpose is?

Please see the attached photos. Many thanks in advance.

I ambled by the Braunhaus site again a few weeks ago. So, the excavations from last year have been covered over (see photo and compare to post #1). A sign at the street says that it is planned to develop an NS documentation centre at the site. Does anyone have more information? I wonder if this will be similar to the recent developments on the Obersalzberg?

There's going to be a museum there covering Munich during the Third Reich. Not before time!

        Here's a link................

          Excellent, thanks for the link.

By the way, I highly recommend this book listed at the posted link:

München. Hauptstadt der Bewegung, Ausstellungskatalog des Münchner Stadtmuseums, München 1993, Neuauflage 2003

I bought my copy at the Stadtmuseum after viewing the excellent NS exhibit.

Is this going to be an open display of the NS period in Munchen, or another white wash and illumination of some of the resisters (heroes) who opposed the regime? I've seen them in the past dedicate and worship many Communists who were killed in the streets fighting the SA. I've been to the Bendler Strasse museum of the German Resistance and it appears that it started in 1943 after Stalingrad. And you see footage of U.S. troops entering Rome and all of the Italians cheering them - rescuing them from Fascism; however, in 1922-43, they also cheered their returning troops home from victories (and murder and butchery) in Ethiopia, Armenia, Greece, Russia, etc. Seems that when the tide turns, everybody turns with it. I'm just a little skeptical that the Germans will be frank about this and show both sides of the NS regime.

I have also heard that the remnants of swastikas painted on the ceiling of the hofbrauhaus were finally completely erradicated. Can anyone attest to this?

                Dont hold your breath

we all know that every german in the 1930's was forced at gun point to support Hitler

Apprently after the war when the allies came through there wasn't a single nazi to be found in Germany

so was Nuremburg rally just 'rent a crowd'?

i like to see history portrayed objectively and accurately; its not much to ask is it?

And what buildings are left in Munchen and other cities that the Nazi Regime built? They've torn most of them down. Like I said, I'm skeptical.

Well, they are still there - for now. Let's keep this to ourselves.

In fact, there are still quite a few swastikas in Bavaria. But for how long?

                        Mike,

I remember very well the 'bavarian haken kreutzen' on the ceiling of the hofbrau haus, but have been told by someone who went there this summer that even that was painted over.

The old deutschen art mueum in munich has a great swastika moasic as well.

They were still there in August. It would take a lot of paint to 'fix' that problem as there are many. As for the mosaics at The House of Art, I am amazed that they have remained unmolsted all these years....

There are quite a few Nazi era buildings left standing (and still used) in München, and many other cities. I guess that many are too expensive to be torn down, or are useful like the "Führerbau" in München.

Quite a few Hakenkreuz still showing too; whether intentional or unintentional, who can say?

I hope that a display in München would be like the Documentation Center in Nürnberg that deals with Reichsparteitag (the Party Rallies) and the Third Reich in that city. IMO that display does a good job of showing and describing historical events. http://www.museen.nuernberg.de/engli...rteitag_e.html

                              Scott-

                              Sadly, that is correct.

Sometime between last summer and this fall, the walls and ceiling of the lower level of the Hofbräuhaus have been cleaned. In the process, all of the checkered swastika banners on the ceiling have been "modified" so that they now look like this:

Here’s a comparison shot taken last June to show what they used to look like:

If you look closely at the third shot (sorry for the crappy photo) you can see that at some point in time, someone actually covered up portions of the banners to make them look more like Swastikas - those covered portions have been removed (or perhaps painted over?)

                              .
