    Monument of Tolerance

    International remembrance ceremony

German and British veteran together with school children

This year the municipality of Heythuysen has the honour to organise the international remembrance ceremony at the Monument of Tolerance together with the Comit******233; Herdenkingsmonument Militairen.

Students of the VMBO St. Ursula will participate in this year’s ceremony. Furthermore various veterans and dignitaries from the Netherlands and from abroad will be present.

The ceremony will take place on November 16th 2006 at 15.00 hours. The Monument is situated near the Nature and Environmental educational centre St. Elisabethshof, Roggelseweg 58 in Haelen. You will be further informed about the programme of the remembrance ceremony by means of the Streekbode (local magazine) and the website of the municipality.

The Monument of Tolerance was erected in remembrance of the 687 military of 11 nationalities who lost their lives in the Leudal region: this is the region between the Noordervaart, the Neer canal, the river Maas en the Wessem-Nederweert canal. As a true sign of tolerance casualties from both sides, Allied as well as German and Austrian, are remembered together.

The committee organises an annual remembrance ceremony and also does historic survey to try and complete the list of killed military.

For more information about the Remembrance Ceremony and the Monument of Tolerance you can visit www.leudalmonument.nl

We hope you are interested and invite you cordially to be present at the ceremony on November 16th this year and to have a look at the website of the committee.

It's good to see German veterans able to participate in these types of events.

Seems thats a monument to forgiveness.

Tolerance, on the other hand, is a totally overused word, just a mantra these days.
