Just revisited this thread from way back and thought I would update a few aspects, and add some more information on the subject of the 'The Great Escape', of which I am still avidly interested.

First off, since originally posting this thread sadly Squadron Leader Bertram Arthur 'Jimmy' James MC RAF, passed away on 18-January-2008.

As I posted earlier, I highly recommend that anyone with an interest in 'The Great Escape' read his book 'Moonless Night'. A man with a truly remarkable spirit and who escaped cold blooded murder at the hands of the Gestapo when 50 of his fellow escapees did not, and still defied his captors until the very end of the war.
Always looking for Luftwaffe Kampfflieger related document groups. In particular anything to Kampfgeschwader 2.

I thought it might be of interest to post some of the published research material concerning 'The Great Escape' and the participants involved.

As a young boy being totally captivated by 'The Great Escape' film, this book was 'a must read' for all those like-minded as myself.

'The Great Escape' by Paul Brickhill.

The first mainstream book to be published on the subject (1950) Flight Lieutenant Paul Brickhill RAAF was present in Stalag Luft III at the time although did not take part in either the tunneling or the escape itself.

A great overview of the event, and still after all these years a great book to start with in learning of the planning and subsequent escape.

'The Great Escaper: The Life and Death of Roger Bushell - Love, Betrayal, Big X and The Great Escape' by Simon Pearson.

There is no doubt that Roger Bushell was a incredibly driven Officer of which few can compare. I have to admit that I was mesmerised by his character played as 'Bartlett' in the film, and was suprised that there was very little written of Roger Bushell in the post war years.

Written with access to the Bushell archive donated to the Imperial War Museum in 2011, the author has attempted to show the parts that made the man. Exhaustively researched and highly recommended.

Probably the best biography I have read, and certainly the most interesting character I have read of in WWII history.

Thanks for bringing this topic back up, Richard - it inspired me to drag out some of my old memorabilia . . . Here is a copy of the Invite from the Great Reunion, as well as a "Fact Sheet" for some of the attendees. The book looks well done - will have to get a copy, I think.

'The Real Great Escape' by Guy Walters.

Highy detailed research into the real events, as opposed to the content of the film. I enjoyed reading this immensely as it contains much detailed information not available beforehand.

One thing I do not agree with however, are some of the comments refering to the authors reasoning behind Roger Bushell's drive and determination tas Big X.

'Human Game - Hunting the Great Escape Murderers' by Simon Read.

The complelling story of how the men who murdered the escapees in cold blood were traced and brought to justice. The odious nature of some of these individuals is shocking, and while some of them did meet their deserved end, others did not.

                  I highly recommend this book.

                  Regards Richard.

'The Dodger: The Extraordinary Story of Churchill's Cousin and the Great Escape' by Tim Carroll

A character of amazing resolve and determination, who proved a thorn on the side of his captors throughout his period of incarceration. Being related to Winston Churchill, he was well aware of the possible fate that could meet him upon capture however, his determination is nothing other than inspirational.

                    Highly recommended reading.

                    Regards Richard.
