A bit of a then and now fluke?

    Friends,

I visited Berlin earlier this year and one of the places I wanted to see was the Reichstag and find out where the famous picture of the Soviet soliders raising their flag was taken.

Anyway to cut a long story short I took a couple of pictures from the roof of the Reichstag and hoped for the best. Anyway on my return I had forgotten the reason for taking this pictures and dismissed them.

However seeing this famous picture on wikipedia made me remember taking the photo's so I dug out the photo's and done a quick comparison.

Here they are. What do you guys think? Is it the same place? (not including the camera angle etc)

    Cheers

    Ian

Looks pretty similar to me (with obvious modern modifications of course). I love then and now photos.

I'd agree. That looks like it to me.

That is the spot. Were you on the roof or some type of balcony to take this picture?

It looks like the soviet soldier would have stood on the 4th "pillar" or the one of the right in the more modern pic.

Does anyone know if this soldier was ever identified?

learn somthing new every day, i didnt know it was still there. but i do know that the famous picture was actually re enacted due to the fact origianally there was no soviet war correspondant present when the flag was first raised. nice picture by the way. phil.

There is public access to the rooftop and dome of the Reichstag. (1 hour plus queue though in April, at 5pm!) The modern picture was taken at entrance to the roof top restaurant.

                  Cheers
