Flying the air lines with your Kit?

I am flying with my WWI German kit and am worried about thefts of my stuff.
Does anyone have any experience flying to events with your kits of any period?

How worried do I have to be?

    Did it successfully

I flew from KCI to LAX last October for a France, 1940 battle. I think I flew Delta. I took to large bags within the limits of size and pushed the weight limit. I had a bayonet, helmet, zeltbahn tent, everything in those two bags. I had my Mauser in a hard case with two keyed locks, one on each end. I had the security guards duck tape around the case after inspection. (Bring your own duck tape) Boy, you move right on through the security check in. No problems going out or coming back. Read the airline instructions on their web page before hand.

YOU CANNOT TAKE BLANKS WITH YOU! YOU WILL BE FINED HEAVILY BY THE FAA.

If you know someone at your destination, mail your blanks to them a head of time. I had a hard time bumming blanks at the battle.
