    berchtesgaden

hi all, thought id give you guys some advice if visiting berchtesgaden, the antique shop on the corner near the fountain sells old postcards of the area, when i asked cauciuosly if they had any third reich period cards, i was marched down the road up the hill, and through a stock room, and then up to an attic. to be honest ithought we were being kidknapped, but there in this room when the door opened was a place full of everything you could wish for. but be careful, there was a lot of crap for the nieve tourist, but there was also a lot of really good stuff too. i got 3 cards two of hitler with nice writing onthe reverse and one with the liebstandarte ss stamp. all 24 euro each. not cheap, but 100% gen. there you go, happy hunting. phil.

I've never been there, and I'm planning a trip to the area next year with my Wife. Do you have any good suggestions about places to stay and visit? What is the best time of year to go - maybe a "least crowded" time? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated . . . .

    Thanks in advance!

      Hello Brad ,

IMO you should try to stay in the Hotel Zum Türken in Obersalzberg.
It is virtually next door to Dodolph old gaff & as such during the war was housing the close protection SS squad . Underneath there is the tunnel network, that u can access from the hotel, that was linking the site.

      Enjoy !!

            Thanks for the tips!

I've been very actively checking into quite a few options, and I'll be finalizing my plans later this month. Just out of curiosity, how close are all of the more "interesting" sites to downtown Salzburg? My Wife has a family member that owns a rental-house in downtown Salzburg, and she has offered it to us at a very attractive rate - free!

I'd like to see as many Third Reich related sites as possible while we are in the area, but I'm a little concerned about getting around to all of them - especially from downtown Salzburg. Rent a car? Take a train? Taxis? Tours? I just don't know enough yet about my options to make the best choice! Arrrgghh!

hi brad, really depends on how much time youve got, salzburg airport to the railway station is around 3/4 of an hour alone with all the heavy traffic, i think a car would be good if you are staying in salzburg, but you can also visit lots of places by bus or train, your first visit will not be your last, it is a breath taking place, here the views and the history go together like beer and peanuts enjoy.

                Phil,

I think we will have about 10 days to spend in the area. My current thinking is that we would spend a week in Salzburg (some of this time with family, I'm sure), and then stay in Obersalzburg for the 3 remaining days. Whatever the case, I will have to make the best of our time - my Wife agreed to putting off her trip to Italy for a while so that I could have a few additional days on this trip! I'm sure she will see the logic in my request once we arrive . . . . . .

Something else I didn't consider - neither of us have developed skills in the local language. I hope I can learn enough German in the next year to avoid looking like a fool!

If anyone else has a tip or two to contribute, I would greatly appreciate the information. We won't be doing this for about another year, but it seems I still have a lot to learn before we go . . . .

Thanks again for all the great info!

                Brad
