        Terry,

Great photos! I sure hope you refrained from putting your hands on all the polished brass in the elevator; I'll never forget the dirty look the elevator operator gave my son, and pulled out a rag to wipe off the fingerprints!

Brad / warfight - check out this site http://www.thirdreichruins.com/tourguide.htm If you want to contact the owner (my brother), he gives tours of the area. He would also recommend staying at the Türken while on the Obersalzberg.

        Best,
        Greg

Yes I recommend this site. A great source of photos and info before you depart for your tour around the Obersalzberg.

I know this is naughty and not the correct place for it but, as you may have guessed, I have taken an interest in this particular area and now collect old photos and postcards showing the various buildings as they were in the 3rd Reich era. Let me know if you have any for sale

Thanks for the sweet pictures. I can't wait to go next year!
Which city in the area do you all think would be cheaper to fly into?
                  Vienna, Frankfurt, Munich?

I've found the cheapest flight through a website called yatratravel.com. They are a ticket consolidator and the airlines will be listed as "major Canadian" or "major German" airline. You don't get to find out what airline it is until you buy the ticket. Of course how many major Canadian or German airlines fly between the States and Germany, so it isn't hard to figure out who it is. Flying through Frankfurt is pretty expensive. Different airports have different fees. The cheapest flight I found turned out to be through Air Canada flying from Texas to Toronto and then non-stop to Munich. Best of luck, fares are increasing daily due to high fuel costs but I managed to find a flight for less than $500.

From England fly to Salzburg then its only a 40 minute bus drive to Berchtesgaden , or about 60 mins on the train if I remember correctly
Train from Munich takes about 4 hours and you have one simple change en route.

Thanks Richard! That is great info. I've been thinking about ticket consolidators but I was afraid that I might get totally screwed on layovers. Sometimes they make you spend a whole day waiting for your connection flight at the airport. Precious time better spent in Bavaria! How was your experience with this?

Stop in the train station in Berchetsgaden if you have time. It was constructed during the Nazi era and still has its original art work. No "dirty birds" or "twisted crosses" but well worth the look!

Well the experience isn't over yet as I have yet to use the ticket. You will get to see your exact schedule prior to paying for the ticket, so no ugly surprises after you pay. We have a 4 hour layover in Toronto which should allow time to comfortably find our next gate in an unknown airport and allow for some time to catch a leisurly meal. I'll try to remember to report back on my experience once I've actually taken the flight and returned.

                                Just reviving an old thread.

I'm hoping to do an Eagles nest tour from Salzburg in August.

Any particular companies better than others?

Hoping for one that doesn't just focus on the Kehlsteinhaus.

                                cheers
