    Kehlsteinhaus (Eagle's nest) tours

Has anybody been to the recently opened Eagle's nest in Berchtesgaden? From the period pictures I've seen it has been kept rather intact. I can't wait to go. Hopefully next year.
Its such a pretty area, hard to believe it was the home of such corruption.

    Here's the offical website:

I am planning on going next year as well - my Wife wants to go to Italy, but I think I can change her mind with this!

We were considering staying in the Obersalzburg area in early September, but we are also concerned with the Oktoberfest crowds, and vacationing crowds in general. Does anyone have any recommendations about what time of year to go that will avoid crowds, and where the best place to stay in the area would be? I would like to see Munich and any other realtively close points of interest, but it will be our first time in Europe. I would like a little "insight" if any memebers have any. All comments would be greatly appreciated . . .

      Brad,
The last time I was there I stayed in Salzburg in the middle of the summer which means 2 things: crowds and **HOT!!**. Your best bet would be to go in the spring (May) or the fall (Sept-Oct). The Eagle's Nest is closed from November to April. You can probably find an inexpensive B&B in the area or a hostel in the Salzburg area. Some of the higher end ones are as nice as a 2-3 star hotel.
      Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip VonLuck! We're planning on being their in the middle of September - it's our Anniversary. I'm just now getting started with making plans for 2007, so I still have a lot to learn before we make the trip . . . . .

Why not stay on the Obersalzberg? Here...http://www.hotel-zum-tuerken.com/ (the building in the center...between the Berghof and Borman's house)
