Sure it's easy to see the mentality of these people. They are left wing modern day communists, who instead of openly praising Marx and Stalin, they use the leftists modern language-No fascists-multicultualism-politicaly correct-anti-christian, and, pro-immigrant. These are the same people who in the 1920's would hurl gas bombs on SA units and threaten any German who leaned toward Hitler. Nothing changes. They have used many organizations to help them, and I have read that many groups in Crete want the memorial and graves leveled or moved to Germany. They hate anyone who praises the German military (some any military at all) and believe in using force by any means to get the point across. Anything sacred that goes against their beliefs they attack and desecrate. I was told by a forum member that a few years ago they actually dug up Horst Wessels grave (including father), used a prominant jewish group to go after Werner Molders , Walter Nowatney(sp), and other German heros to get their names off buildings, and squadrons. They effectively want the German side of WW2 purged. There has even some murmers to clamp down on the internet to shut down sites like this, and many more that are devoted to the fair study of that terrible time.

It is worth remembering that there was very little love lost between Cretan's and German forces, particularly Fallschirmjager. They had the knives out for each other 60 years ago with very nasty things being done by both sides, the people in that area also really do bare a grudge, you'll find deep seated hatred going back hunderds if not thousands of years all over the Med.. We may look upon those men that landed on Crete as a military Elite 'just doing their job' to be praised and admired, but to the civil population they were an invader and occupier, is it so increadible that they react in this way? Obviously I am not condoning the actions, mainly because I think it's pointless trashing some stone, and I'm sure some of it is just wanton vandalism in the name of some silly convinient excuse/cause, but people have to remember there's more to history that helmets and medals.

        No, they are not.

The people who are responsible for this past May events, more than half of them were Germans BTW, belong to the Antifa movement which originates in Germany and has spread to other countries, including Greece and has nothing to do with the common people of Crete! Communists don't like them either. Essentially they are anarchists.

It is my understanding, but I may be wrong here, that the memorial as well as the cemetary are the responsibility of German organizations and not the Greek authorities.

Present day Cretans have nothing against the German people and I can tell you they are quite happy to have them there as tourists or permanent residents.
When in the past the memorial was destroyed a couple more times, the money to rebuild it came partially from former Cretan resistance members. Cretans, being great fighters themselfes, could always appreciate and extend respect to a worthy foe.

        Best wishes

Yes we have antifa here in New Zealand too but they do not have popular support: they are seen as aggresive extremists who offer nothing much positve to society

what makes me laugh the most about antifa is that they say they are for freedom and anarchy, freedom of speech etc etc yet I find them to be not only close minded and aggresive, but very biggoted as well.

they should take a hard look at themselves.

recently here in New Zealand they tried (aggresively) to shut down a nationalist demonstration whilst at the same time proclaiming they stood for freedom and peace

I think they are kids with attitude problems

          send them to boot camp

I agree with the answer of Yannis absolutely.
do not have no relation those that created the episodes with the proud cretan population.hi is some anarchic and creating everywhere troubles.

before few days came one old German paratrooper in Crete, and met one of cretan fighters to saved the life in the invasion,it had been wounded, and came to become friends, and to apologizes, after so much yearsand was given big publicity by all the cretan channels too much.

the monument was destroyed stis 31/11/01 by extreme meteorological phenomena, when struck lightning the eagle and cut him in two pieces.the broken bird was not never replaced despite enough her efforts to be made and to be placed in the place.some pieces they had remained they took him in houses for suvenir, and other they flew him.

With all respect to your opinions and feelings, do not forget those who fell and why.

Please take some time to read this page:

I personally do not think a german memorial is appropiate there, a memorial to all who perished due to war would fit much better.
