The Führer Bunker Finally Gets a Plaque

    Saw this on CNN:

Rochus Misch still looks pretty spry for 88...

Yes the Fuehrer bunker is on my hit list of places to visit.

somehow i get the feeling it wil probably become a neo nazi "holy site" but then again it probably is already

If someone has "special" feelings about the place, I bet no sign is needed to find it.

I visited the site of the bunker in 1991 shortly after the wall came down. It was in what had been 'no mans' land' between the two walls and there was a plaque there then (nr the Vosstrasse). It was on a small mound on a 2' high brick plinth. I am currently scanning all my 35mm slides to disc (currently on 1989!) and will post the pic when I finally find it

It's one of those things where those who want to know where it's at can easily find the area - there's just not much that shows what was once there. All the WWII tours I see in the city end up there sooner or later - it is a mark of the tour guide's knowledge if they can lead the group to the right spot or just say (witha sweeping hand gesture) "and here was where Hitler killed himself and his body was burned" - indicating about two square miles of possibilities!

I saw it from an observation platform overlooking the then active wall in 1982. It was a small grassy lump out in a mine field watched by machine gun toting DDR Border Guards with barbed wire all around. There were some vicious looking bunnies hopping around out there also!

That's it! It was just sand though when I saw it in 91. I found the slides and will scan them and post them when I'm home next.
