They operated rocket type artillery commonly referred to as "nebelwerfer' translated literally as smoke projector, nicknamed 'Screaming meemies' by US troops. The reason this branch of the army was called smoke troops is because the laying of smoke was what some of the first weapons were designed to do. In fact 2 of the first 'nebelwerfer' models were in fact nothing more than large calibre mortars like the nebelwerfer 35 and 40. It's only when we get to the 6 barrelled nebelwerfer 41 that we start seeing true multiple launch rocket artillery.
