Help Preserve US Civil War Battlefields

This is just one instance, but you can help - developers near Atlanta, Georgia have proposed to build on a site that contains one of the few remaining examples of a fort built by Confederate forces. It is of one of the famous "Shoupade" redoubts built by the Confederates for Johnston's River Line, the last major line of works above the city of Atlanta. These forts were designed by CS Gen. Francis Shoup of the Army of Tennessee. Some 33 of these unique forts were built - and they have no comparison anywhere in Civil War fortifications. Less than a dozen now remain thanks to the urban sprawl that is modern Atlanta.

You can sign an online petition at http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takea...ltl=1147371318

hey Greg. I just filled out your petition. plenty of land out there. they can build elsewhere! I am going back to Gettysburg this 4th of July for the 4th time. I highly recommend it to everyone to see ATLEAST once. it will change you, it did me. the 2cnd. time is when I decided to join the Army myself. it moved me that much. to trod the same footsteps that those brave soldiers did...hard not to become emotional with such an occurence. Im sure I will always be a visitor there, its that damn beautiful and inspiring. Glenn

James, good deal, but if you can you really want to go there on the 4th of July weekend as there are over 10000 soldiers doing battle and other daily routine acts the whole 3 days. its unreal! Glenn

          Thanks, guys!

You fellow crackers have fun at Gettysburg! I have been there several times in years past, visiting during reenactments and such, but I've never gotten to visit since I found out that my gt-gt-gfather was wounded there while attacking Devils Den in Co. H, Third Arkansas Infantry. Wish I was going with you!

          Best,
          Greg

For those of you interested in preserving other US Civil War battlefields, you might check out the Civil War Preservation Trust at www.cwpt.org a non-profit group (your contributions are tax-deductible!) devoted to saving Civil War battlefields. They use the donations to buy up battlefield property, sponsor educational tours and programs and campaign to make the public aware of such battlefields and commercial efforts to use such land for housing and industrial parks, etc. Check out their website.

Hi Homer, I agree. I think the CWPT does a great job. Chuck (my great, great grandfather was a member of the 45th Georgia Infantry Regiment, ANV)
