    Graf Spee's eagle recovered

Look what has just been pulled out of the sea in Montivideo!

Sorry for the size of the photo, I found it on the internet after doing a search, as I spotted this little gem on tonight's TV news!!!

I thought I would add a bit from the report, which reads in part:

Divers have salvaged a 2 metre (6 ft)bronze Imperial eagle from the German World War two battleship Graf Spee that was scuttled in the River Plate.

Three divers had to loosen 145 bolts securing the 300 KG (661 lb.) eagle to the stern of the craft in the muddy waters off Uruguay's capitol Montivideo.

The eagle's swastika was hidden as a mark of consideration.

This was from a BBC report on the internet.

(Their wording too on the 'Imperial' bit!!!)

    Best wishes

    Bob

I wonder if that is the only ship's eagle in existence, (other than those still at the bottom of the sea). It's nice to see Uruguay is finally taking an interest in salvaging the Graf Spee.

Humberto Corado has also put this topic up, and it is in 'Die Kneipe'.

            Greetings from California,

I do hope that this wonderful piece of history , finishes up in a museum : Instead of an extremely wealthy collectors home. Never to be seen again, going from one wealthy collector to the next owner .
