    Berlin.

I am considering going to Berlin for a week later this year.
Can anyone offer any advice on places to stay , transport / getting around, what to see etc and if there are any places to buy or not to buy ?

If all works out between the bills of assorted children , students etc willing.

ATB Berlin book I would take as a heavy weight guide but so often the practical advice of folks who have been there would be much appreciated.
    thanks to all in davance.

    Hi James -

Skip is a Berliner, so I hope he sees this thread. Buying is rough as Berlin is one of the more left-wing German cities in terms of city leadership and outlook. There is a market on the weekend at the Lustgarten (I think that's it - it is right next to the Museum Insel) where they have TR items usually under the tables - last time I was there it was heavy on Polizei items, but there were a lot of badges and easier to find medals - EKII's, IAB's, that sort of thing.

There is a brand new Holiday Inn Express right by the old Anhalter Bahnhof. I don't know what your budget will be, but the location is stellar.

As far as history, Berlin can't be beat. Do a search under "Berlin" o this site and you'll see several photo tours by Adrian Stevenson and others that will give you a good idea of what is out there.

I am going myself in March, and am going to explore some of the more out of the way sites - the LSSAH barracks, the Flak Tower, Treptow, and the Bendlerstrasse, as well as Saschenhausen.

Attention future Berlin visitors: If you want to on the single best tour of Third Reich Berlin, please contact me via email. A friend of mine gives the single best tours of Berlin that exist - bar none. He gives public tours, but you should pony up the money and take one of his private tours. He's english, but speaks fluent German. You will never look at Berlin or your collection the same way ever again. To give you an idea of how great he is to listen to, myself and two friends gave up the chance to have dinner with a Knights Cross winner in order to spend another day on tour. He's that good. He'll show you the Chinese restaurant that no sits at the former entrance of the Chancellory, he'll take you for a bit to eat in the basement of the Propaganda Ministry, he'll show you Heydrich's grave (unmarked), as well as other famous graves (Molders and Udet come to mind), he'll show you structures that still retain 100% of their unrestored battle damage, he'll take you to SS and Gestapo Headquarters. Or, if Sachenhausen is your thing, he'll take you there. I can't say enough about this guy.
