Battlefields Archeological Review

Dear all,

I am extremely curious about the annually published Battlefields Archeological Review (BAR), not to be confused with Battlefields Annual Review, published by the same company (they really ought to have more different names IMHO!). So far two Archeological Reviews have been published. Has anyone here ever seen/bought them? Much on WWII in them? Eastern Front? Are the articles based on the authors visiting and digging in the battlefields in question?

I have searched the net in vain for detailed info on BAR. The books are described at Amazon etc - but no real details are given.

Any feedback MUCH appreciated!

Dear all,

I decided to buy the book in spite of not knowing the contents.

So, now I have it here in front of me.

First, a word about the title: its not Battlefields ARCHAEOLOGICAL Review but Battlefields ANNUAL Review. The publisher had planned to publish a book with the name Battlefields ARCHAEOLOGICAL Review and several e-stores even sell a book by that title. But in the end the publisher decided not to publish both an annual and an archaeological review but instead to publish a combination, just called Battlefields Annual Review . Are you still with me?

Well, I can say about the 2005 edition that it has some very interesting articles about World War One battlefields and also some recent discoveries on General Custer******180;s last battlefield - with fascinating photos. I was also very pleasantly surprised by an article about what can be discerned from aerial photos of older battlefields in Germany - amazing!

But If you are a WWII only type of buff the 2005 issue of BAR is not that interesting for you...

Lets hope the 2006 issue will be more WWII-oriented!

Hi Lars

I picked up the book myself recently and must recommend it to anyone remotely interested in battlefield archaeology. I feel it has particular relevance for those of us who investigate WWII sites and battlefields.
It also provides a little food for thought on how archaeologists and museums view detectorists, collectors and other 'treasure hunters'.

I've picked up some good tips from it and has got me thinking about how i can start to record things properly. For example, taping a GPS to a metal detector and recording the coordinates for each find.

2004?

Hi Simon,

Glad you too liked it.

But which one did you get? Two have been published so far. I got the one for 2005, with musketeers on the cover. Then there´s the 2004 one with Cromwell tanks in Normandy. I haven´t been able to find out what subjects are in that one. The cover photo would indicate that digging in Normandy is part of it. Is that so?

And are there any other WWII battlefields in it?

On amazon.com the BAR with Cromwell tanks on the cover is listed as having been published on April 1, 2005.

It also states that it covers both Normandy and the 60th anniversary of the Battle for Berlin.

If it has anything on recent finds from the Normandy fields and from Berlin construction sites I will want to buy this one as well. However, I am not interested if it is just summarizing what happened.

Does nobody here have it?
