    Fort Loudon State Historic Site

Just a few miles up the road from my home is Fort Loudon State Historic Site. This is a fort that was established by the British during the French and Indian War in East Tennessee. If I recall correctly, it was in use from 1756-1760. The fort has been reconstructed on the original site, but I would recommend a visit if anyone visits the Vonore, TN area.

I hope that you will enjoy the following pictures.

Here is a view of one of the reproduction cannon that is used during Living History Demonstrations by park staff and volunteers. Inside the museum are a nice collection of artifacts that were discovered during the excavation of the site. Among the artifacts are one of the original cannon that was discovered 5 miles upstream in a farmer's field.

This fort was surrendered to the Cherokee Indians when the garrison became extremely low on food and supplies. Many of the garrison were massacred by the Cherokees some miles after being marched out of the fort.

Here is view from the gun platform. The lake that you see in the photos was created by the TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) during either the 1930s or 40s. Tellico Lake covers the site of an original Cherokee Village that was located close by to the fort.

              Great pictures.Thanks for posting them.
I think the massacre of the surrendered English garrison by the Cherokees was the theme that Cooper used in his novel THE LAST OF THE MOHIGANS(also, portrayed in that film).

Wonder why they(Park Service) have flown a Royal Navy flag over the garrison?

This evening, I've spoken to the site manager and he informed me that the Roayl Navy flag was also flown at garrisons such as Ft. Loudon. Maybe some of British members will confirm this one for us.
