Quick Tour of Allatoona Pass Battlefield

Today I made a quick tour of the US Civil War battlefield at Allatoona Pass. This was a short, but particularly nasty battle fought in October 1864. Hope you enjoy the pictures! The first pictures are of the Texas and Missouri Confederate monuments.

This view is of the old Tennessee Wagon Road. Prior to the Civil War, this was part of the main route from Atlanta to Chattanooga.

Along the left flank of the Eastern Redoubt, lies trenches used by Federal Infantry.

The next view is of the Star Fort, which lies on the opposite end of the old railroad cut. This was the scene of some of the most ferocious fighting.

Here is a shot of the inside of the pass. This pass was the site where the Western and Atlantic Railroad ran. As a historical sidenote, members of the Union Army who participated in the raid of a locomotive in 1862 were the first members of the US Army to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Some of the raiders were captured, tried, and executed by Confederate authorities. The leader of this expedition, James J. Andrews, was a civilian, and as such was not entitled to the MOH.

Relic hunters beware! Most of the battlefield property is owned by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Most of the signage that you see on the property has been created, and posted by members of the Etowah Valley Historical Society.
