    KZ-Gedenstatte Husum-Schwesing

Hi: Wife and I were up in Northern Germany (Flensburg & Kiel) area seeing the sights and ran into the small memorial to a small KZ up here. https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/KZ-A...usum-Schwesing

It is small but interesting.... I didn’t know about this but saw the brown “sight of interest” sign on the road and decided to investigate...glad we did.

      Thank you for posting.

The camp, KZ-Außenlager Husum-Schwesing aka Engelsburg, was a satellite of Konzentrationslager Neuengamme-Hamburg. The prisoners were detailed to construct fortifications against an Allied assault (see Friesenwall project). Although designed to hold cca 400 people, the barracks eventually held 2,500 prisoners. The death toll is unknown but official records state nearly 300 prisoners died in the camp. Having only existed for several months (autumn 1944 - end of year), the prisoners were transported back to the main camp at Neuengamme due to the changing military situation. SS-Untersturmführer Hans Hermann Griem was the Lagerkommandant, SS-Oberscharführer Emanuel Eichler his deputy. The permanent exhibition at the site was established in spring 2017.
