Anything to see in North Africa?

Just wondering as im ploughing my way through the bender edition of rommel, whether anyone has scoured North Africa?
I have romantic visions of sand blasted panzers laying there half buried in the sun bleached sand
Seriously though is there anything to see or was it all scrapped by the locals?

Mostly it was all scraped, but there are a few things left like on all battlefields. Not tanks, but helmets and equipments. The locals pick things up when they find them, so theres not much left over after all these years. Egypt is the most mined country in the world; and suposedly, people are regularly wounded or killed in WW2 mine explosions. I suspect its the same in Lybia.

I've seen photo's of trucks, both German and British in the sand, they were colour photo's taken a couple of years ago. I believe Egypt was the location. They were relatively intact, a bit blasted by sand but there was still paint evident. I' will try to find them and post. Egypt is still a no go zone due to mines, El Alamein is a little touristy and you can not get to any pits because of the minefields. Libya, since it opened up recently, is a future possibility for tours, Tobruk and Benghazi would be fantastic to see.

Down near the border with Chad are 3 or 4 Italian trucks that were captured by the LRDG. They are parked in the lee of a hill about 20 miles from the border on the Siwa track. Also the fuel tins that were used to mark the track across the Great Sand Sea by the LRDG are still there.

You can still find landmines.

I was at objective SNIPE at El-Alamein and picked up a pocket full of shrapnel. I also found a British (Australian more like it) helmet at the El-Alamein train station. The station is no longer there.

Chap, did the helmet have a raw edge or was there a separate rim? Raw = Australian.

Wow!!! Interesting you ask that question.

The edge is raw, without a lip. I compared it to a WWI 1st ID helmet I have which appears to be british and everthing is the same but the lip. There is no lining in the helmet I found.
The location was where the Australians were...that is why I thought it was Australian.

On another note...all the German items are fake in the Egyptian museums.

Ill tell you guys when eygpt someday admits they have a mine problem which they are trying hard to cover up. Then when theres mine action programmes that need to be set up, we will see what pops up from the sandy areas nobody could get to before!!!
