    Holiday in Bavaria and Austria

I am hoping to be near Salzburg in August and also aim to visit Munich, Berchtesgaden, Landsberg, Brannau, etc....I would value any advice as to any interesting places to see.

    Berchtesgaden - Eagle's Nest

Bad Toelz - SS Officer School

Munich - Feldherrnhalle, Fuehrer Building, NSDAP Building, Koenigsplatz, Zirkus Krone, Tal, Oberwiesenfeld, Dachau, Allach, etc. etc. etc. Munich is a dream city!

Have a look at the 'Third Reich in Ruins' website. It's all there.

Thanks Robin. Most of these on my list already. I have already got a few postcards of the Obersalzberg and the Feldherrnhalle but I hope our members will have plenty of photos to offer me of other places.

        Terry.

The best bit of general advice I can give you is to have a good old exploration of Munich on foot. You come across some nice things in very unexpected places......like eagle statues with the swastikas hewn off, and stone lions that once sat in front of the Munich Gestapo HQ, now on a side-street. There are some nice little antique shops near the Viktualienmarkt in the city centre (Schneider's and one near the police station) but most of the TR stuff is fake.

Thanks again Robin. Any advice you can give me would be most appreciated. If anyone has any hints about Austria...shops, monuments, etc...let me know. Planning to go to Brannau and maybe Mauthausen if not too far....

Follow the link...i think its for interrest

            http://milmus.mi.funpic.de/

You could combine the visit of that museum with a visit of KZ Mauthausen

The fleamarkets are on Saturdays (normaly), i think you should ask
the people when you are in a hotel, they will know where you can find a fleamarket if there is one ...

Grüß Gott (Bavarian greeting) und Servus (Austrian greeting) Terry,

I lived in Germany for 10 years from 1981-91 with five of those years in München...some of the best times of my life. I use to work at McGraw Kaserne which was the old RZM Headquarters. I don't know what has happened to all that area since the US Army moved out and handed it back to the Germans in the 90's. In Munich, you should also check out the Bavarian Film Studios which made Das Boote, Stalingrad, and Der Untergang. Then you MUST go to the Waldwirtschaft Grosshesselohe (http://www.waldwirtschaft.de/)...the best beer garden in all of Munich, bar none!!!

In Salzburg, go to the Castle...if you go to the entrance of the museum in the castel...continue walking up the stairs past it and you will find an unmarked Rainier Regimental and Gebirgsjäger Museum.

You should also go the the Aschenbrenner Haus near Kufstein in the Kaisergebirge. Peter Aschenbrenner was a world-class mountaineer. He was also a Heeresbergführer in the Gebirgstruppe. There is a nice little museam there and the restaurant serves the best Salzburger Nockerl which is a Souffle desert. Innsbruck, isn't very far and they have the Kaiserjäger Museum.

Back in Germany, Berchtesgarden also has many former Gebirgsjäger buildings. Also, the town below Berchtesgarden, Bad Reichenhall, has several nice Gebirgsjäger Kasernen, plus you can cross over the "Kreta-brucke" or Crete-Bridge.

As to Flea Marketeering, pick up a copy of the magazine "Sammler Journal." It will have a listing of every flea market in Germany, Austria, and other countries for that month in the back.

                  Viel Spaß!!!

I've recently been to Bavaria and can confirm it's a great place to go.

We visited the flea markets and picked up a couple of pieces.

Munich was great, it's definately somewhere I'd go back to.

We did one of the TR walking tours which was very informative.

I'm sure you'll have a good time Terry.

                      Regards,

                      Mark.
